funny I kinda thought it was the other way around, local for patient; not as bad on us having to go thru post op wake up etc ... and general bc the surgeon prefers us not talking and asking questions lol
Althou seriously, I'd prefer a local and I have asked if that was possible when I get my graft, it wouldn't bother me at all, besides I'd see the 'results' as it happened and my surgeon is considering my request - normally, according to him he'd only do local for grafts on elderly patients.
Hopefully ... anway ...

Well apparently its not meant to be that bad...I beleive that worst part is when they inject the eye so that it relaxes and doesnt move about...but even thats done after anesthetic drops

I'm in serious danger of having my prejudices undermined! Happy, I used to be, with the thought of going to sleep, resting a while and awaking with new cornea snugly sewn into place.

Now all this talk of local anaesthetics and 'not waking up' from general anaesthesia has given me a hankering to know more. I'll ask the surgeon at my pre-op assessment.

Thanks all, I think!

Oh my!!!!
I've never really liked the thought of general anaesthetics.
But I'm one of those who spend half the rest of the day bumping across the ceiling having panic attacks if I forget to badger the dentist into using a special type of anaesthetic.
ANd sometimes even from the right" sort I get dizzy spells and more-or-less hallucinations.
So I don't know which I'd like the sound of least.
Aaarghh.

Sorry I want maximum drugs for any surgical procedure!!! General aneasthetic, two house bricks slapped across my head, the lot. The thought of surgery under a local makes me run screaming from my lounge like when I watch Olivier drilling into Dustin Hoffman's teeth with no local aneasthetic in Marathon Man.
I've got that Hammer Horror kind of scream.

Yes, I think I could....bear in mind you are administered drugs to relax you, are given anesthetic, and then the eye is totally imobolised. You are also VERY drowsy....I saw a video of it being done on the web and its looked so simple HE SAYS. Also, when the KCenter board was around there were tons that had it with Local.....

Hmmmmm.....I guess in a way it would be cool to see the things comin to the eye and not feeling it.....etc etc....talking to the Surgeon as he does it...etc? No?

Whimper...not for me. Having had a subconjunctival injection after the local eyedrops, it was not a nice experience being injected there. As for sedatives, people react differently to those. When I did a day in the endoscopy clinic [granted a long time ago], most patients were 'out of it' but a couple were not, one very much not so.

I would actually be very much ok with it as at least then i would be more involved in what was going on. The stress i had about not waking up after a general wasn't funny. I was entirely convinced that i would be awake and they would be operating on me and i wouldn't be able to say anything, or worst of all that i would never wake up again!

I was having a panic attack and on the verge of passing out when i was wheeled into theatre as it felt like i was being condemned and that the hospital trolley would be the last memory i had! At least with a local i would have been able to say OWWW that dam well hurts!!!!!! LMAO!!! And so i wouldn't have been so dam stressed!

Ooppss sorry to frighten anyone!

I know this question will sound silly  , but did you have a choice of whether to have a local or a general?

Could you have chosen to have a local if that was your preference?
John
