Now there's a question that only an Anglophone could ask. it is precisely because you need to ask, jayuk, that you'll probably never know :D

One great regret of my life is that I have never learned Welsh, but then I live in a part of the UK where two other minority languages are commonly spoken (Doric in the North East and Scots Gaelic in the West and Western Isles) Not to mention the hybrid Norse/Scots language they still speak in the Orkneys and Shetland Islands.

It can be an advantage when travelling in the smaller nations to be able to ask a shopkeeper in Welsh, Gaelic, Doric etc for a pint of milk.

fortunately, however, as pharmacists have to study in big cities like Glasgow, even those limited to English or French or German or Spanish ... could usually find someone who will understand that they need some Hypermelamose, or contact lens cleaning fluid

I think that the Klingon language is actually based on Welsh in terms of syntax. It is also well-known to be as difficult to learn as that Celtic language.

:D

I was visiting a friend in the United States. he asked me if I'd tried Dr Pepper. I had not. He gave me some and I immediately recognized the unmistakable flavour of fizzy prune juice.

"A warrior's drink" I quipped.

HE HAD NO IDEA WHAT I MEANT

I mean, what's the point of being American if he can't recognize a Star Trek reference?

Proud of you Louise. Keep up the Klingon!

John, I reckon the Klingon Empire wouldn't take kindly to be compared to the Welsh [no offence meant to the Welsh !]. It's just that they are such a proud species.
Hey Andrew fellow Trekkie! I'm more fluent in Borg.
Yes an American should be trek-fluent!
There will be the first grand slam sci-fi convention in April [20-22nd] in central London. You can check it on the web [creation entertainment], the daily on-the-door tickets are the cheapest [£20].

Andrew,

Welsh has much in common with Gaelic, Doric and the older languages spoken in Holland, France and Germany that predates the languages spoken there to day.

Key words such as Milk, Water, Mother, Father are very similar, so if you can speak one you could probably be understood if you found someone who spoke the old language.

Welsh are Irish that could not swim and the Irish, Welsh and Scotish are the true English, just smarter. They had the sense to run when England was invaded rather than stand about to be slaughtered :D

I love that image!

The Swedes tell a story about the original Scandanavians (distant relatives of the Celts) arriving on the peninsla from North Europe. They found a sign saying "You have arrived in Sweden". Those who could read stayed put and the others became Norwegian.

The Norwegians tell the same story, but their sign read "Norway, this way  " Those who could read followed the sign. The rest thought they had arrived. :D

ROFL!!!! Gee that made me laugh so much! One comment on the welsh language and it started a whole conversation about the world! LOL!! :P

Gareth i had to smile at your interpretation of celts, hehe! Some in England do mention that the welsh hate them whereas all i can say is stop being so dam paranoid!! If i hate you i'll dam well tell you but it won't be because you are english! Gee, all of my best friends are english and to conform to what some think about the english / welsh divide is silly to say the least! Although i do need to add here that the celts take losing at rugby so much better and always support each other whoever wins!

Also for the record i speak very little welsh, i sadly lost loads of it when i left primary school as there was no-one around who could speak it. Years later though my mum went on to be fluent in cymraeg, kernow and gaelic to name a few but i was already in my late teens by then and not at all interested in learning! If i was from North Wales no doubt i would be fluent, but then they speak a completely different language to the South so we still wouldn't get anywhere!!

So have fun wherever you live and whatever accent you have, as i have to say you were born like that and it is probably too late to change it now!!

Sweet

thats what I love about the forum. Somebody says something and the conversation grows arms and legs. it develops a life of its own.

I only hope that jayboi managed to speak to the people in Dresden, and that he did not try Welsh, Klingon, Doric or any other of the esoteric tongues that populate the hilly corners of Europe!

Andrew,

I think it would have to be a pretty big hill to find a group of Kingon-speakers atop it! Several light-years high perhaps? :D
