London social meeting

Postby John Smith » Sun 15 Jan 2006 1:19 am

Following the successful get-together organised by Stephanie SJ in December, we decided that we'd like to do this sort of thing more often.

With a vague aim of having these things bi-monthly, I'm now inviting allcomers to a gathering on Sunday afternoon, February 12th.

The aim is rather like before... to have some chat about all things KC (or anything else that takes our fancy  ) over a couple of drinks and the option of a meal.

We chose to have a pub environment last time, as it is probably the best setup - people can drink alcohol or coffee as they want, and a range of decent food is available - again optional.

Of course, following certain undesirables last time, we wanted a different venue. So I've found a nice central London pub (attached to a hotel :!: ) with a fairly quiet atmosphere on a Sunday with a non-smoking section, serving decent beer and food.

It's within easy walking distance for many people travelling by rail:
  • District & Circle lines, Thameslink and South East Trains at Blackfriars - about 5 mins walk - just on the other side of Blackfriars bridge.
  • Bakerloo and Northern lines and South West Trains at Waterloo (about 10 mins walk down Stamford Street)
  • Jubilee line and South East trains (Waterloo East interchange) at Southwark station (about 5 mins walk down Blackfriars Road)
  • Buses 45, 63, 100, 381, and RV1, all stop nearby

And for those of an artistic bent, Tate Modern gallery is just a short walk along the embankment.

The venue is the Mad Hatter Hotel, one of the popular Fuller's "Ale & Pie Houses". It is located at the corner of Blackfriars Bridge, Blackfriars Bridge Road, Stamford Street and Southwark Street at 3-7 Stamford Street, SE1 9NY.
A scrollable, zoomable map is courtesy Google.

So, who's coming?[/url]

I must get my eyes checked  ! I just read this post and thought 'Damm I've missed it' ! Then I remembered it's still January  - maybe it's not my eyes that are the problem!!! If I am not still swamped by revision and can get there I will do my best - but after March 13th would be better - essay due 30th Jan :? , big exam, written and practical 6th Feb :( and even bigger written one (3hr) on March 13th  !

Sally

It'll be good to meet you on the 12th, Sally, but there's always the next one if not! (But if I remember my student days, any excuses for a drink would do! )

Don't know whereabouts in Cambs you are, but you can easily get the 100 from Liverpool Street or the 45 or 63 from Kings Cross... so you've managed the prize for the shortest walk of all if you come along!

I call dibs on wearing sunglasses :P ... I'd go just bc its so close to the Tate, lol, but anyone know somewhere a little cheaper to stay like a B&B that they could rec? Mad Hatter £125 pn seems a bit much considering it'll cost me around that for a flight!
Only those with KC know the hidden beauty of a Christmas Tree.

Well, if you're thinking of staying nearby, there's a Holiday Inn Express just down the road. That looks like £69 per night, which is a little better than the Mad Hatter's rates!

Sounds like an excellent plan.

An earlier start is also a bonus as that way I don't have the mad dash to the last train just as things are getting settled down.
