I think for my first graft I had to wait about six months from being put on the list until surgery. I was recently told that the wait is down to four or five months in Glasgow. I am one month into the wait for my second graft

I don't know the ins and outs of this, but I think there is a bank of corneas stored somewhere. Unlike deep organ transplant, it is possible to take and preserve cornea graft tissue under chill or deep freeze conditions. There seems to be no deterioration of tissue quality.

I think that the cornea bank is in the English Midlands.

Sorry for babbling like this. Maybe someone else can fill in the gaps.

There are a fair few eye banks in the UK now, and the way/chemicals used to preserve the Cornea's does have an influence on the cell life etc....

Hope that helps

Sweet wrote:...everything was loose and that it looked like i had been poked in the eye! Moreso because it didn't just affect the top stitches but the ones underneath as well. I was thinking that as i haven't been poked or prodded and have been so dam careful and don't lift and carry heavy things that it must be with me removing eye make up and so have decided to stop wearing any for the time being...

Is it possible you rubbed your eye in your sleep? I have read around this a lot now, and it seems no matter what you do, sometimes, this can happen. Althou there are certain vitamin and other suppliments to help recovery but if stitches are splitting and coming loose like that I think there's probably nothing you can do about it but go to the clinic... shame its happening as I can only imagine the worry but hopefully it will settle down.

As to waiting times for a graft, my doc pre empted this a little bit, althou I didn't need a graft during the summer of last year, he got me on the waiting list as he believed we were nearing the end of the road with lenses anyway, but the surgeon explained I was a prime candidate for DALK so I only had to wait just over 3 mths - initially I had turned it down bc I was traveling - now that I'm back I'm told I just have to wait between 6-8wks.

Yes, I do think that Claire's eye could have been damaged during sleep (possibly more likely than being bruised in December, too).

That's why I suggested wearing an eye shield in bed for a while. Funnily enough, Moorfields said the same thing!

I was given mine at the hospital, so you could try your local one, or possibly at your chemists.

I can buy eye shields in the local pharmacy.

I have apnoea, and my mask sometimes rides up and presses against my eye, so the shield is a sight saver!

Ok thanks for that! I will try the local chemists and see what they say!

I went to Moorfields 'A & E' where i had a stitch removed and contacted my surgeon today to make sure that it was ok and so long as i take the required drops which he had already given me and see him again in three weeks i will be fine.

Hoping nothing else goes wrong!

Thanks again, Sweet X x X
