I have been wearing soft perms for about a month and a couple questions.
1. What solution brand do most people use? i am using Aosept Clean and Clear. I think it is working well but it does not have an enzymatic cleaner. Does anyone know of any brand that makes an enzymatic for soft perms.
2. My left lens is comfortable. On some days my right lens is fine on others its very annoying and irritating. Anyone else experience this? Very frustrating when i put my lens in every morning i pray that it will be a day it wont hurt.
3. Anyone else have excessive dryness with soft perms? When i wore soft toric or rgps never ever used drops. Now with soft perms i use them all the time. Is this ok and is this bad?

Ill attempt to answer your questions
1.
For SoftPerms I used a traditional lens cleaning kit, and then used protein removing tablets around twice a week...I didnt opt for the all in ones which had the protein remover as I thought that they wouldnt be as effective.
2. This may be a fit issue, overwearing, lens surface not clean etc. A test you can do,
a) Perform the cleaning duties again before you insert the troublesome lens
b) wear the lens one day on, one day off and see if that helps
c) Take the troublesome lens out half way through the day, rest for 5-15 minutes, clean the lens and insert back
d) Use a lubricant throughout the day..
3. Dryness MAY be a cause for concern. Do you get this in both eyes? The could be a number of reasons for this ranging from the material, the fit, wearing time etc etc
Hope that helps

Thanks so much for the advice. i actually rested the eye for 3 days, it felt fine and on the 4th day i put the lenses back in. Right away it was achy. i wore it for the majority of the day because i was wondering if you have to "break" in the eye again like with RGPs. Meanwhile it made the eye sore again. I religiously use the systane. i am going back to the dr. this coming tuesday for a new right lens, but it still a soft perm lens. since i had this problem with rgp and with another soft perm lensand now this right perm lens (all with right eye only) i am not holding out much hope that this will work. Plus the 3 week wait period between lenses is frustrating. Does anyone have any suggestions of a different type of lens to try due to this symptom of eye soreness or eye "pain" when lens is taken out? is this related to the rgp portion of the lens. when i wore soft lenses i neverhad this problem, i didnt see as well and i ended up with a lot of conjuctivitis and swollen eyelids. and advice would be very welcome as I am beginning to lose hope as this whole process is coming up on a year.

There are a number of lens designs you can try.
RoseK, Kerasoft, Scleral etc. I am assuming that you have gone from Soft to Softperms?....
It sounds like the SoftPerm is too tight on the cornea and is bearing down...however this would need to be checked by your eye specialists.
It would also be worth while speaking to them about RoseK, Kerasoft and Scleral lenses..as these are all options for managing KC with lenses
Hope that helps

If your lens is giving you so much discomfort, I'd lay off wearing it.
Don't give up hope! As Jay said there are lots and lots of different sorts of lens available. This one is not for you? then try another.
I know it can be difficult to have to wait between appointments to try the new lens, and I know also that it is no consolation to know that we have all been through the same thing!
It may be worth while, though, if in the end you find a lens you can wear with comfort and with which you have good vision.

Wishing you all the best in your search. It does take time to find the right lens for you and it can get disheartening when you read of others doing so well with a certain lens which you just can't get the hang of at all! You are thinking what on earth am i doing wrong here???!
It is the same for me with sclerals. I waited years to get one and then just couldn't get the hang of inserting it properly when i had it and after many failed practices when i did get it positioned right the vision just wasn't worth the effort so i gave up with them!
But do keep trying as you will get there in the end, and new contact lenses are being trialled every day. Maybe tomorrow there will be a new one that will have your name on it!

Thanks so much for the advice and replies. It is helpful to have some hope that things may get better.
I went to my opthamologist (cornea specialist) today. He is not involved at all in my contact process. My eyes as usual were sore the past 2 days and when he took a look at them he said they definitly are not "normal" eyes and the right one was much worse than the left one. He said they were swollen at the bottom and appeared extremely dry. his feeling on it was yes maybe switching contacts would help but he thinks the eye is "allergic" to contact lenses which really scared me. He said to see what happens when the new fit soft perm on the right eye comes in next week. If it doesnt work, tell the contact doctor i want a new type of lens. Its odd the eyes are dry as i use the systane and rewetting drops throughout the day. Before these lenses I never ever used eye drops at all with soft toric lenses and rgps. Does anyone know if this soreness is due to dryness? Do soft perms create a dryer eye than say the rose k or kerasoft? Is there any possibility that the new soft perm next week will even work or should i jump the gun for a new lens?

Hi there really sorry to hear how things are with you. I think that soft lenses may make your eyes a little drier, they do need more water so maybe they are using too much! I think though that they affect people differently. I wear a soft lens as a piggy back and it doesn't really seem any drier to me, i do use systane as well though twice a day and add some saline throughout the day to stop it drying.
I would say to get the next soft lens as you don't know, and as it has been ordered now you may as well give it a go. One week and you should know if you can srick with it or needing to try something else.
Hoping all goes well with you!

If you didn'lt have a problems with rgp's in the first place then it does seem sensible to stay with them rather than mess around with softperm.
Then again I've never been a real fan of softperm - ever since the days of the old Saturn lens 25+years ago! (softperm = Saturn lens inslightly different materials but the concept is the same)

Just as an update to everyone who has been so kind. When I went back to the Contacts guy, he looked at my right eye and decided that even the new soft perm lens coming in wasnt going to make this problem go away. So I am ordered out of contacts for 10 days and he has ordered a new type of lens. its actually a soft lens. He did say it is going to compromise the vision I was getting with the soft perms but he thinks the right cornea wil handle this lens a lot better. Since the soft perms gave great vision but tremendous pain i am willing to try this route. In the right eye I have no signs of KC (yet) it is in the left eye and its early stages so I guess for now he is opting more for comfort. I will keep everyone posted on how it works. thanks for the support. I am just hoping to get some lenses where I dont have to worry about this for awhile!
