Can somebody explain in detail what measurements are taken by an Optom in a routine eye examination. I seem to spend my entire life staring at a funduscope or a slit lamp. It would really help my head if I knew what they were doing and what the readings they take mean.

I feel really ignorant asking this.

Well when they look through the slit lamp they are looking more at the physical attributes of the eye, looking, the state of the cornea, the rear of the eye, any new scarring, redness, and vascularisation etc etc.....
When they take a topography than they are looking at the corneal mapping and its shape and distortion. For KC patients this is invaluable as it allows to see the changes in the KC as well as measuring and obtaining K readings.

KC is about facing the challenges it creates rather than accepting the problems it generates -

Hey Drewy!!
Hehe, no problem with asking i've learnt recently to keep asking as many questions as you need to as it is very easy to walk out of an appt and not know what the hell just happened!
Honestly the last five months have been dam confusing and i think i have driven most of Moorfields staff mad with all my questions but at least i now understand why my eye is so bad and what i need to do to make things better
Before all of this i was very happy to just take what was said and think everything was fine, but now i want to know WHY these things happen and how bad my eyesight really is. I guess we just suddenly wake up one morning and realise that we can't rely on our eyesight forever and that we need to work out our next course of action in order to see.
Hehe, i have decided now though that i have worked my way through enough conditions and that my eye just needs a break and some TLC LOL! Hopefully this graft will even things up somewhat so that i won't be relying on one eye anymore.
Hoping things are well with you, will drop you a line soon! Also don't worry about eye tests too much, i am driving myself insane as i have now memorised most of the eye charts which doesn't help anyone least of all me. My optometrist has said he now needs to get a new one, oh brother!! LOL!! Maybe it's not the chart that's the problem, it's just how many times i read the dam thing!
Take care, love Claire X x X
