Eye indent with Sclerals

Postby sarahrose » Sat 26 Mar 2011 5:31 pm

Hi there,

I've had KC for about 12 years, for most of this time I wore RGP lenses but became intolerable to them and started wearing Scleral lenses last October. I've mostly found them great, they are really comfy and I have much better vision with them. However, I have noticed indents on the surface of my eyes when I remove my lenses at the end of the day. It looks as though the indents are where the edge of the lens sits on my eye. I pointed this out at my 3 month check up at Moorfields and they weren't too worried about it as it was the first time I had been able to wear a lens comfortably in a couple of years. I am starting to worry about it though, as the indent seems to be appearing more frequently and often leaves my eyes feeling quite tender, sometimes so bad that I can't wear lenses for consecutive days. I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this or had any advice? My next check up is in May, should I try move this forward?

Thanks,

Sarah

Are these full-size sclerals you have? - not the "mini-sclerals"?
If so..... the edges go right under the eyelids and up tot he corner of the eye. Where are these indentations, then?
DO you mean you can pull back the eyelids and see them on the surface where the lens edge goes, right up under the eyelids? Or feel them with your fingertips? Or...?
I've never noticed the problem in getting on for 35 years (eek!) of wearing sclerals. But we are all different.
Who do you see at Moorfields? - the famous Ken? Or one of the team?
If he/they aren't worried about the indents, I don't suppose they are serious per se.
More worrying is if the wearing time is going down.
Can you taking the lenses out of r ar est in the middle of the day, say, and putting them in again later? DOes that help comfort and wearing time?
Or, if you're stuck and need to see something, maybe trying wearing one at a time, so the other eye is always resting?

Those are all good questions that Rosemary asks. The most important thing is that if the team at your clinic are not too worried about the 'indents', maybe you shouldn't be fretting too much about them. I presume from what you say that the phenomenon is temporary, and that your eye resumes its globe shape quite rapidly.

I can make temporary marks on my arm by resting it on something with texture; maybe the soft tissue of your eye carries the slight impression of the lens that has rested against it for a while; it is possible that this means you have healthily low iop?

That said, if you are anxious about this, go back to the clinic and tell them that you are worried and ask them all the questions you have so that they can answer your fears. If you do that, would you come back and let us know what they say? We are all intrigued.

Every good wish

Thanks all for your replies.

I have the mini-sclerals, so the indent is on the white of my eye, a few mm out from my iris. I can also feel them through my eyelids when I close my eyes. I think Andrew's analogy to resting your arm on something textured best describes it, it is like an impression where the edges of the lens has rested. My eyes get back to normal overnight, but sometimes my right eye is still a bit sore, so I mostly wear my left lens, and alternate days with my right. I did have my iop checked at my last visit and it was fine

I see a different person each time at Moorfields, although have seen Ken once and he discouraged me from getting Sclerals, but decided to give them ago a few months later when I was still unable to wear my RGPs. I guess if it is mainly my right eye I have a problem with a problem I could give it a rest in the middle of the day, and hopefully it will make things better. Also, I do manage to wear my sclerals for a very long time, usually 8am - 11pm, they are comfortable all day long, it is only when I take them out that I notice the indent and they feel sore. Maybe I could take them out when I get in from work rather than keeping them in all evening... I hate not being able to cook/watch tv/read in the evening though, but I guess that is something we all have to put up with!

I shall get in touch with the clinic and see if they can move my appointment forward and will let you know what they say.

Thanks again for your help and advice. I'm fairly new to the forum, so nice to speak to people that understand what is going on!

Sarah

Why not ask about full size sclerals? My all time favourite lens was a scleral and it beat everything else for comfort and correction.
