Airborne Dust: Bane of the Graftees!!

Postby piper » Wed 27 Feb 2008 1:52 am

Well, it has been a while since I've been here and moaned and whined.......so i'm back . Hope you have all been well, and PATIENT. .......Patience, you know, is the most important medicine for us KC people!!
OK.......I still have two stitches in the first graft (16 months) and the 16-point running stitch (10 months) in the second graft. the second one is in my left eye and with the contact in I SEE LIKE A BLOODY HAWK!!! But, when I get into airborne dust conditions I really suffer......and in a working violin/mandolin production shop, dust is a fact of life. So, some days are OK and some are Hell.

My question is: does anyone else really notice dust? wood dust or other dust? and are there any handy ways to deal with it either before or after being "invaded" by it.

As usual, I thank you in advance for the responses which are sure to come.

Cheers, Piper

Piper

Good to see you! It's been too long.

Your questions chime with the experience of many of us. When I visit local industry I always wear a pair of safety glasses to protect my eyes from dust. Just a word of warning; after about 45 minutes with them on,so a short rest from the glasses is a good idea.

The other solution that used to work for me was to wear scleral or haptic lenses. they were great, but would be an expensive option for a double graftee who just wanted to avoid dust.

All the best; how are things in Louisiana?

Andrew, I have tried a fully enclosed dust goggle....and have found that i have trouble keeping the dust-free INSIDE while stored in the shop. Let's face it, this is a dusty business. Some days are no trouble. Yesterday, for instance, I never turned a machine on, but did spend time cleaning and straightening up shelves and storage areas.

Well, I'll go back to the goggles and try to wash them off more often.

Thanks, Piper

... or keep them somewhere dust free (glove compartment of your car?). Put them on before entering your workshop and step outside to take them off.

Actually an "eye air" break has to be every bit as good a reason to stand on the sidewalk as a smoke break.
