I have recently changed my mortgage and the company who I previously had critical illness cover with have stated they will not cover me for blindness due to me having keratoconus. Their compromise, after several letters of complaint is to include an exclusion clause that they will not pay out for blindness if I go blind due to keratoconus. Has anyone on the forum had similar problems and does anyone know of a company who doesn't include restrictions fo keratoconus?

I encountered this when I got my first mortgage so went through a different company to get my mortgage and critical illness cover. I still ended up with a mortgage with the same bank as the preveous company offered but with a different one for critical illness cover. I have changed my mortgage twice since but have not needed to cjange the critical illness cover.
The other thing is, these people do not understand KC so if you have not done so already, get a letter from your specialist as this may help.

You were right to protest this because KC doesn't increase the likelihood of you going blind through glaucoma or an accident etc., but it's unlikely that any insurer would cover you for an existing medical condition, especially one that does put people in a position where they can't work for some time.
Were you informed that the policy would change and that you wouldn't be covered for anything that had been diagnosed since you took out the original policy? If not, you could argue that the mortgage / insurance was missold.

Hi
I had an income protection plan with a company to whom I disclosed my KC before I took out the policy. I am currently in receipt of monthly income from them having had to leave my academic post after transplants - could no longer sustain a 60 hour week and for 2 years could not drive round schools supervising trainee teachers. I retrained and now work P/T, self employed, but they continue to top up my income.
If anyone wants the details, please email me on janetmanning@onetel.com
