I can feel my INTAC

Postby jack hobbs » Tue 20 Feb 2007 7:06 pm

About 18 months ago I had INTAC treatment at a clinic in London. After the treatment my eyes were extremely light sensitive, I contacted the clinic to let them know how much discomfort I was in but I was pretty much ignored. About 5 months after my treatment I was in so much pain that I went to the clinic and one of the doctors examined me. He found that the INTAC had broken free and was scratching the eyelid and causing scaring on the cornea. The doctor immediately removed the INTAC. After several consultations with this particular clinic they have offered to pay for my treatment elsewhere.
I am due to have INTAC retreatment later next month; I am hoping that the vision will be as good as the previous time.
The clinic that I am getting treated at use the Femtosecond laser, which I am told can create deeper channels for the INTAC - apparently 80% depth of the INTAC is implanted (before it was only 50%)
I can still feel the INTAC that I have in my good eye each time I blink - I am therefore considering having this retreated - hopefully the deeper channels will resolve my current issues.
Has anyone had similar experiences? I am very interested to find out if anyone with INTACS is aware that they have them.

I have INTACS in one eye (left) and it always seems like I can feel them when I take my lenses out. I've had no problems with them though, and have frequent checkups (procedure was done in May 2005 - I see my OD or surgeon at least 4-10 times a year combined).

The channels for my INTACS were done with the laser (Intralase).

Hi Jack,

Welcome to the forum.

Intac treatment is relatively new to us here and I think of the few who have had it done most have had a success.

Hopefully your bad experience is an isolated case. I think you are brave going for a re treatment.

Please let us know how you get on because intacs does interest a geat many here.

Hi Jack.

Sometimes I can feel my intac, but most of the time I don't. The times when I can it just feels like I still have a lens in the eye - so it's nothing major. Usually it just happens if I blink hard.
At the moment I can't feel it at all though, so maybe it's still recovering (had a 2nd segment put in 2 wks ago).
All the best with your next attempt!
Kirsten :)

intacs

Postby Kathy Hobkirk » Thu 01 Mar 2007 7:53 pm

Hi Jack

I had my intacs put in both eyes nearly 12 months ago ( I go back next week for my check). Like you I am every light sensitive but with different colour glasses it is manageable.

I can still feel mine everytime I blink but I have sort of got used to it now. Sometimes I forget and rub my eye then it really does hurt. I can't wear lenses anymore because of intolerance and touch wood I manage well with glasses and the intacs but some days are better than others.

My channels were made manually not by laser. It wasn't a nice experience and I'm glad I had them both done at the same time but hopefully my surgeon will still be happy with the progress.

Good luck with it all.

Kathy

It is worth saying here that no treatment is problem free. My worry about new and controversial treatments (like Mini Ark etc) is that the problems may not be well understood.

A couple of years ago Intacs therapy was being boosted as a virtually problem free solution to early stage KC. Yet as experience increases more and more people are encountering difficulties. all these interventions (including grafts) ought to have a health warning. At least going into each of my grafts and the cataract operation last month, I was always told what the potential problems were, and in light of these I made an informed choice to proceed.

All I can feel at the moment is the stitch. However I can see the edges of the INTACS from time to time, as my eye tries to focus, more so at night when I get halos. Light sensitivity has become an issue, but am managing that with sunglasses, this I was told could last from a couple of months to a couple of years. On the whole though the eye is better now than it was 3 weeks ago.

No surgery is without it's own risks and problems afterwards, and those experienced can and will vary from person to person
