keratoconus and hypermobility

Postby toffee » Tue 08 Dec 2015 3:17 pm

Wondered if there is a link between these two conditions.
I've had hypermobility syndrome for many years and it's basically a problem with collagen throughout the body. So I was interested to hear that keratoconus is also problems with collagen.

Yes, there is a link. Certainly the medical literature on KC often mentions that people with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and those with Marfan's (both mentioned in the article you've linked to) are more likely than the general population to develop KC. And I remember taking part in a research project years ago when I was first diagnosed with KC when I was asked about joint hypermobility. Though for some reason, the link usually just seems to work one way - in other words, most people with KC don't also have joint hypermobility. There's still a lot that isn't known about KC.
