Trivia

"Trivia" is a plural noun. Although first used as a noun in the early 20th Century, it is derived from the Middle English word Trivial, which is in its turn derived from the Latin Trivialis or Trivium. (Of or pertaining to the Three Ways).

In the ancient world it was common to find an Inn at the junction of roads. At the place where more than two roads met there was always a lot of traffic, with dealers, traders and such travelling with their wares.

They would sit in the evening and talk about this and that. The name for this chit chat was taken from the place they met.

The Latin for three is Tri

The Latin for road is Vium (plural was via)

so an Inn at a junction of three roads was an inn at the Tri-via. The modern word trivia is derived from the sort of chat that was exchanged at the Inn of the three roads.
