I can't speak for others, but for me being given the box in the ward made a connection with the new cornea. It was very special.

So far as I know, they use old corneas for examination as part of the ongoing research into the condition. In years to come, some ernest young medical students will open their text books and be confronted by an electron microscope photo of the desiccated remains of an anonymous cornea with a caption like "thinned stroma in keratoconus", and will remain blissfully unaware of the identity of the diminutive but overweight Scottish Clergyman who grew that inadequate structure!
