I did have 24 stitches, 12 deep ones and 12 shallow ones placed on top in a flower shape! The last time i went to see the surgeon he had to remove one top stitch and now i have had to have five stitches removed at once, two from top and three deep ones. Then later at Moorfields they removed another top stitch so that now leaves me with 17, am just hoping that that is going to be enough!! LOL!!

Sadly they have all been taken from the same place being the bottom, so i am more worried that this is going to mess up the graft and cause more astigmatism. I think that the last stitch broke as it was being pulled from having the others removed. My surgeon did say that when the other stitches are removed that he can cut the bottom again and restitch it as it is pulling away. Will wait and find out.

The cornea apparently is very clear and has been like that pretty much throughout. It did heal too well at one point which is why i had to go back Friday just to check that the stitches weren't all covered over. So it was a big shock to find that it was exactly the opposite and i had to have some removed!

I am being positive though, i now pad my eye to go to bed and i've stopped wearing eye make up for the minute as i think i need to give my poor eye a rest! Am thinking about a bandage lens and am going to mention it the next time i have an appointment which is in three weeks. It sounds like a good idea to try to keep the graft in place.

Well it's five months today and am really hoping that the next five months goes well!

can't actually shed any light on any of your problems as I am not that far down he road with my KC (and reading what everyone has said I am hoping I will never get there !) anyway I just letting you know I am thinking about you and hope that things improve soon . You know what they say about people in the medical profession being bad patients LOL.

Different consultants ahve different practises. I had 16 stitches in all. They took them out in two traunches of eight (although the second eight turned out to be seven as one of them had broken and was stubbornly staying in place).

Sometime we must compare notes on the numnbers of sutures, and the sorts of suture different surgeons favour, their impact on the resultant astigmatism and the time between surgery and suture removal.

Hehe yea it would be interesting! It is all down to surgeons choice i guess, what they want to use and the way they suture. I think i'm lucky that he did use a lot of stitches or i could be in a lot worse trouble!!

Maybe having more stitches in the first place actually increases the probability of breaking one or more of them, as there is less tolerance between each stitch?

If that's the case, then as I said on Saturday morning then you're down to the same number of stitches that I had in the first place - maybe that's built-in?

Hhmm maybe although surely more stitches would kinda hold it in place more i would have thought?

I don't know but what i do know is that my eye was hard to graft and my surgeon did say that he had a little trouble with it and that it would take a very long time to settle down. Maybe it is just trying to find it's own way here and that i should just let it work itself out!

I am sorry to hear about your stitch problems, but hope the final 17 behave themselves.

I'm sure it's not anything you have done, so don't go blaming yourself as sadly sometimes these things happen.
