Haptic/ Scleral lenses on the NHS
Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone knows anywhere that does haptic/ scleral lenses on the NHS? I have been fitted for some today but I have been told they will cost over £800! I live in the Midlands area but can travel.

Hi, I have just posted a question on this too - I am looking to order some in for trials but have been told £600 per pair and last for 6 months which has worried me.
I really struggle with grp lenses. How did you find the comfort and vision with them??
Thanks, Alastair

Yes you can get scleral lenses on the NHS.
You would need to get your GP to refer you to a hospital eye department. You would then probably see an ophthalmologist who would refer you to a specialist contact lens optician. The optician could be on the High Street or the hospital may have its own contact lens department.
There are lots of different types of lenses for KC and the large scleral lenses are only one of many different types so they may not necessarily choose the scleral lens for you.

Re: Haptic/ Scleral lenses on the NHS
Thank you for you replies, i have been signposted to an eye hospital in Birmingham that may be able to help, i will keep you posted on my progress. Alistair i have not been able to get on with an other lens, i was fitted with sclerals yesterday and I couldn't believe how comfortable the were! My vision came up as nearly 20/20 as well so the are definitely the lens i want.

WOW, thats really reassuring to hear. If I could get my vision back the cost would become trivial but at the moment the cost and pain is not getting me anywhere near. Good luck!!
