DAY 4 of RGP LENSES

Postby KJC73 » Fri 11 Nov 2011 9:43 am

Collected my RGP lenses on Monday. I am now on day 4 and struggling today. I managed 4 hours wear on Wednesday - they felt ok so kept them in, but today after only 2 hours feel like I need to take them out already. I feel like I've gone back to the start because I managed 2 hours on Tuesday. How long should I be wearing them for by now, and did I over do it on Wednesday?

The optometrist said I should be wearing them all day within a couple of weeks (and one website said that within a week you should be able to wear them all day) - is this true or should I take it slower than this? My vision is so much better with them, so want to persevere but if I only get 4 hours wear a day then I'll have to try something else. I just feel like rubbing my eyes all the time, and I'm afraid that if I do I'll lose a lens or do some serious damage to my cornea. Or am I panicing unneccessarily?

Any help or comments would be appreciated.

Thanks

I know it's tempting to keep the lenses in when they're giving you good vision. But at the beginning, it's sensible to do things gradually and just add one hour a day . And taking one step forward and then two back isn't uncommon when you're getting used to lenses. So don't despair yet! Take it more gradually and hopefully you'll be getting to 8-10 hrs by the end of next week. Have you got a follow up appt with the contact lens specialist soon? If you're still struggling (which I hope you won't be) by the time you next see them, don't pretend all is well. It might be that the fit will need a small tweak. Good luck!

Hello all - 1st post :D

I collected my rgp's on Thursday and have been wearing them a few hours each day.
Ive not been having too much grief, but today my left (better) eye was so so painful - only managed about an hour today.
I'm not worried - things like this will take time, and to be honest - the vision with rgp's is worth the discomfort! I carry soothing eye lotion when wearing the lenses, so can add a few drops when it feels a it scratchy..

Give it time!

Hello Golfpaul and welcome to the forum. Well done with the lenses; the key here is not to overdo it, especially at first.

Every good wish.

Hi there

And hello to you all

I received my RGP lenses yesterday and done my first hour with them last night, WOW what a difference they made, it was like having HD vision lol, though towards the end of the hours they were feeling like they were irritating my eyes so was no way going to go over the hour.

i was wondering if anyone had any tips for getting used to them, and also would using Optrex after wearing them do any harm and my wife mentioned about using it but i was not too sure

many thanks
Ian

Hi Ian and welcome!
It's great when the contact lenses make such a big difference to the vision - though the temptation then is to take things too quickly to get that vision all the time! The main thing is to follow your optometrist's advice and build up the wearing time gradually over several weeks. It does get easier! Though we all have good and bad lens days, so don't get disheartened if you suddenly find they're more uncomfortable one day.
Using some sort of soothing eye drop after they've come out sounds like a good idea to me.
Good luck!

Hi there

well 2 hours were completed last night and towards the end i can not lie my eyes were aching. not a painful as the first night, but i did wash them in an eye bath of a branded Eye solution (not sure if i can mention names) and they do feel a lot better today.

i hope this little bit of info might be of some help to some of you,

thanks
Ian

Hi everyone,

I am probably a little late in giving my experience with this but i can completely relate to your frustration. When i first got my RGP's I was reluctant to wear them but found that being persistent did help and speaking to my contact lens specialist helped. She recommended wearing soft or a bandage lens underneath the small RGPs or having a larger one that doesn't sit on the cornea but on the white of your eye. The latter has made the most difference and I do not get the 'blinking vision' of the contact lenses moving up and down when I blink. It really helps me to do other activities such as climbing or swimming which is great!!!
