Tom,

I wonder whether a little hole drilled in your scleral might help? I had one because my eye wasn't getting enough oxygen through the thicker lens material of the scleral.

The optometrist returned my scleral to the manufacturer, they drilled a 'fenestration' and returned the lens to me. After that everything was much better.

I used to have fenestration holes in my sclerals (two in each, normally).
That was when I was on Merseyside and the sclerals were made f perspex (PMMA).
Moved down to London and spent many happy years (!! - or so it felt) trying to convince the one and only Ken he didn't need to go on trying out all these other gizmos, just drill a couple of holes for me.
Then we went onto the gas permeable polymers in stead of perspex. Supposedly, one doesnt need air holes because the air goes through the gas permeable structur of the lens.
It seems to work.......
thogh I've said to Ken before now that he will eventually make me a lens with little holes drilled in it!!!!!
Do let us know what they saw about the idea - the "theory" is holes aren't need with RGP. But then, how mnay of us fit the text book exactly?!

My scleral was made of Gas Permeable polymers, and they did give me a fenestration; the problem was not with the material but with the thickness of the material.

Once the hole was drilled, my eye settled down.

Did Gartnavel drill the hole themselves, or did the manufacturers? - and either way, do ou know who did manufacture it?

They sent the lens back to the manufacturers (they told me that the lenses were made by a firm that was connected to Moorfields). The lens was away for about 10 days and then I got it back through the post.

After that I could see the little hole about two mm to the left of the focus spot on the lens. Oxygen was getting to my eye right beside my cornea.

That's the people: Innovative Sclerals; they seem to have folks from Moorfields on their board.

One of the Innovative Sclerals people was guest speaker at the last London area meeting (at Moorfields).
I think it's less a case of Moorfields people being onthe board as that IS person(s) also work at Moorfields.
Interesting they have contemplated drilling holes in RGP sclerals - must remember that!!!!!!

Spoke to my consultant on tuesday.......

As it turns out contact lenses for me are out of the question until my stitches are out, or at least begin to come out. :(
I have my prescription as below, and i have found it dificult to find companies that are able to make the lens reasonably priced due to the high Cyl.
Most of the online ones wont even look at it
Oh, and as my prescription is likely to change every time stitches are taken out etc... i will have to get a new lens, i am estimating at least 4 times in the next 2 years....ouch

Right None
Left Sph +2.00 Cyl -550 Axis 120

I have to get the left one done in super-hyper thin lenses in order to make my eyes look as similar as i can and for the lenses to be as similarly matched in thickness as possible.

1.67 aspherical has been mentioned. going spectacle shopping tomorrow.... what are your thoughts/suggestions?

Tom
