Graft waiting list

Postby Ste_Russ » Fri 25 Jan 2008 3:57 pm

Hello All

I ve been entered on to the transplant waiting list .......after asking few questions and receiving good answers I forgot to ask how long the wait is for a tansplant  . Apparently I will need a large section of cornea replacing due to the defect been in the lower left quadrant of my left eye .

I was just wondering iF anyone has a ruff idea of the wait I will have

I am under Dr Cota , Renee Eye Clinic , St Helens , Merseyside .

Many Thanks

I was originally told that it would be a 3 months waiting list before a graft would be available from the Bristol Eye bank. To my surprise I got a call this week (7 days after the request) to be told my op would be carried out on the 6th of February. Now I don't know if this if the norm or if I just got lucky. I do have Bupa cover but I don't think that has any bearing on the graft list but it may have helped with the theatre slot. The admin manger at the hospital seemed just as surprised as me , my theory is the consultant has rushed it through before I could change my mind!!!!!
good luck.
Chris

The honest answer to your question is that the time varies. One variable is your age. they don't much like grafting tissue from old donors into young eyes.

If it is any help, the longest I had to wait was just short of three months.

My Son has been waiting since October for a corneal graft at the Bristol eye hospital. He was initially told it would be 3 to 4 months but last week had a telephone call offering an appointment in April which will be roughly about 6 months.

nan

Welcome to the forum

I know that the wait can be frustrating, but as your son now has a date, we all hope that his surgery is a big success, and that his sight returns quickly.

Tell him he is in our thoughts, and maybe even direct him to the forum!

All the best

Andrew
