I was diagnosed with KC around 6 months ago but have lived with it for around a decade (bad opticians and lack of support) but finally I have some good news.

I went to Moorfileds yesterday for my secomd fitting and to finally see a consultant.

2 Good things happened, firstly the consultant has said in his experience he thinks I'm likely to only need contacts for life, whilst this isn't necessarily correct it's good news.

Second I got a really good apir of lenses, a nice comfortabel fit, and they should be on their way soon.

So thanks to all the help I have recievd and whilst I may not have posted often, I have gained loads of info that I have found both invaluable and reasurring.

Glad things going OK for you - and really hope it stays that way. Many people with KC only ever need RGP's to manage it - and they don't post here very often!

Now then, I don't want to put the dampers on, but for the sake of your expectations please just be aware that lenses that seem a really good fit when you try them at the hospital don't always turn out that way when you actually get your own! I have suffered from that and if you read through some other threads here you will find many others in similar vein! (Have a look at some of Michael P's posts !). Sometimes you may have to go back several times before you get the right pair - just don't give up if that happens. But here's hoping your s are fine!

On the subject of opticians, it came out at the confrence and having spoken to trainee optoms I meet at my hospital, they are taught very little on KC so unless they take an active interest it is extremely hard for them to gain experience to be able to diagnose KC. 10 years ago the level of technology to pick up KC was less soffisticated than now and this equipment is expensive so relatively few can afford such diagnostic equipment.

In retrospect it may seem the optoms were bad and had provided a lack of support but they may well have been doing the best they could based on their curerent knowledge and diagnostic equipment available.

Main thing is you have found the group and started your journey on managing KC.

The great thing about hospital optometrists is that they have loads of experience of fitting KC eyes. In glasgow we are very well served by expert optometrists, but I understand from other strings in the forum that this may not be the universal experience of people in all parts of the UK.

Carrying on from what Pat A has said, it is true to say that I have had quite a few lens fittings since April of this year, which seemed fine only for me to find that when the lenses arrived, I had great problems with them. HOWEVER, I think this was more to do with a change my eyes had undergone following cataract surgery (even though I believe there may be no logic to this).

Prior to this I had 30+ years of pretty comfortable RGP lens wear and I see no reason why you shouldn't have the same.

I am once again having comfortable lens wear albeit piggybacking.

Let us know how the lenses are when they arrive.
