I am reminded of a one-time colleague on the staff of the Open University.
Who commented on how the disabled OU students all seemed to be belligerent, bloody-minded argumentative so-and-sos.
Why, he wondered, did the OU end up with a load of disabled studeents all like tat.

Look at it from the other end, I said. They are having to cope with sometimes quite severe disabilities, and life, work, study and the beenfits/social work "systems". If they weren't bloody minded, belligeerent argumentative so-and-sos, would they ever have got to the point two-thirds of the way through an OU degree where you get to meet them?

Reminds me of conversation I had with a mate the other day about how 'ordinary' stuff grinds people down, like dealing with council repairs departments. Unless you're assertive and even if you are, you can still get shafted. I've seen a woman driven mad over 5 years by a council that refuses to do the neccessary repairs. I was left with no heating for a whole year in my temporary housing which affected my asthma. After 9 months I gave up, I didn't have any fight left in me. Anyone with a disability has to fight for stuff and others have the audacity to call that belligerant. Walk in the other persons shoes I say..

Lou
Oh dear - you've really cheered me up!
We got back from our hols on Saturday to find the CH boiler malfunctioning so no heat or water. Gritish Bass were so good they came out on Sunday - but couldn't fix it. Came back Wednesday, and Thursday and still no heating. They are coming back again next Tuesday. Thank goodness it isn't the bleak "mid winter"........and we have an immersion heater - but we only had a new CH boiler at enormous cost in August 2005 and this will be the 24th visit since then..........!

I am ready to scream, very loudly, ..........and chocolate doesn't seem to help!
