Back in 1991 we went to Universal Studios in Florida and visited the Star Trek exhibit there, my eldest son is a real Trekkie, we had the opportunity to make a video so I can honestly say I have beamed aboard the Enterprise NCC1701 and sat at the controls pressing those buttons.
Suffice to say the resulting video is extremely embarrasing to watch and is hidden at the back of the cupboard but it was fun to do and the kids loved it.
It's quite something to have your molecules disappear and reappear smewhere else.
Live Long and Prosper.

At one time in TNG they began to discuss the ethics of the transporter, but they quickly dropped the hot potato.
There are, as you know two Rikers: the original now calls himself Tom after being rescued from a planet where he had been stranded after a transporter accident. The copy calls himself Will and was the first officer on Piccard's "Enterprise".
Here is the ethical dilemma: it appears that the transporter does not dematerialize the individual at one location and then rematerialize her or him at another. Instead the transporter scans the traveller and makes an exact replica of him or her at the destination. Once this had been accomplished the transporter destroys the original.
Hence two Rikers. The transporter did not destroy the original after making the copy.
Now the copy is an exact replica at the time the transport is made, allowing for the possibility of editing out any viral infections or other such invasions. The copy contains all that marks the individuality and identity of the original, even down the memories of the original.
But the original is then destroyed. I can understand why they shied away from this moral conundrum, but it would have been interesting to pursue. Instead they made Tom Riker into a Maquis and sidelined him.

I had no idea that whole episodes of Trek were available on YouTube.
And questions are asked about copyright infringement!
Still, in a few more years, Trek will be out of copyright anyway. I'm sure that's the real reason for the current re-issue: to retain another 50 years of copyright protection.
