David

The Alphacor artificial cornea has had mixed reviews from the Optham community. The main problem has been leakage within the eye.....due to the host corneal tissue not attached itself well to the artificial rim of the cornea.....whilst the creators have tried there best to ensure the rim integrates and joined with the host tissue..its been a somewhat challening task. Advances are being made with the Alphacor....but I am not sure of recent improvements.......

Also, if mem serves me right, the procedure is two stage.....which is also quiet stressful for the patient. To my knowledge the Alphacor was been used in situations where there have been excessive rejections and re-transplants..which have subsequently failed

Up until this article, I always thought it was for the elder 18+ generation but this kinda changes things!

Hmmmmmmm.,

Ken Nischal is very VERY experienced and what he is saying is that even if he had the the experience to do it, he wouldn't have.

To me, just looking at the photo, the affected eye is much smaller than the other, indicating possible other pathology.

At best I think this is a rather heroic attempt at restoring vision..

For the childs sake I hope it is a success, as a mother I think I would do anything for my child, but I do tend to worry about benefit versus potential gain. I do realise sometimes the earlier the better, I think this is one I will sit on the fence on.
