why won't my messages outbox empty??

why won't my messages outbox empty??
... what am I doing wrong? I tick them, select go - nothing. Shut down, open up, leave it a few hours - try again, still nothing. Yeah, I know I'm not very computer literate - someone tell me what I'm doing wrong!!

Go to 'use control panel'
Click the 'private messages' tab
Select the mail-box you want to empty
Check the box beside the posts you want to delete
In the options box select 'delete marked'
Click 'go'
that should be that.
