Flying With Keratoconus

Hi, I'm Alec, I'm 18. I have Keratoconus, more so in my left eye than my right. My right eye has very good vision, and seems not to be affected. For this reason I tend to largely ignore my left eyes exceptionally poor vision as I can see perfectly fine and it rarely affects my life. However I'm going on Holiday in a few weeks, and I will need to fly. The last Time I was on a plane (about two years ago), A lot of pressure built up in my left eye during the landing (also only happened one way), and it took well over an hour to settle down after the flight. After that I didn't think much of it until recently when I asked my optician about it at a recent appointment (I wasn't really expecting it to be a big deal). But she told me that she wasn't entirely sure if it would be safe for me to fly, she said my eye had got considerably worse over the past two years and she has referred my to a specialist, which I hope to see within the next several weeks. However I am simply looking for a second opinion on this, and to see whether anyone else has experienced similar.

Alec

Welcome to the forum. You ask an interesting and important question.

I can say that I have been a more or less frequent flyer and have no knowledge of whether or not flying has had an impact on my keratoconus. I'm pretty sure that others will be along in a moment with more wisdom to share, but I'd still ask my specialist when I saw her or him. Will you let us know what you are told?

Andrew

Hi Alex,

The only advice I've had is to try not to wear contact lenses while fkying as the cabin air is very drying. This is easier said than done.
