Glaucoma

Postby feelicia » Thu 02 Feb 2012 11:23 am

What kind of diseases other than glaucoma can cause blindness? I know that diabetes and retina detachment can cause blindness as well. But what else can cause blindness? I do not have a vision problem, I am just curious because once I wanted to become an ophthalmologist. So what else can cause blindness other than these three things?

Hello Felicia

Keratoconus can cause blindness, but seldom does. Macular Degeneration is the commonest cause of blindness in the elderly in the UK. Actually, the list is pretty long and I daresay that one of the professional optometrists who frequent the site will be along in a moment to give a comprehensive list.

In the meantime, thank you for your interest in eye problems.

Every good wish.

Andrew
