I just found out yesterday that I passed my last lot of medical Finals exams and am thus now finally qualified as a doctor :D I'm so excited and relieved, I can't believe that finally after 6 and a half long years it's over and I've finally done it. But done it is, and as soon as I can get my GMC registration, I'll be starting work as Dr Victoria. It's going to be a fantastic weekend!

I'm a bit late with the congrats, but anyway, congratulations! Are you enjoying your foundation placement? Have you decided if you want to specialise in anything? All the best to you.

At what point do you medics make decisions about specialisms? I suppose that there is a general exposure to the range of medical (and surgical?) disciplines during your medical education, and that people probably emerge from the process with an idea of where they want to go, but when do young doctors actually make the choices they confront between psycho-geriatrics and GUM?

Andrew, yeh thats right. It depends really. Some people go into medical school knowing exactly what sort of doctor they want to be, others havent decided yet. There are 2 years of foundation training after medical school, where you change departments every few months (as far as I remember) and I think it is in the second year that you apply for your specialist training (is that right Vic?). Some doctors say its good to have an idea of what you want to do early on, but then others say to us to keep an open mind during medical school. I personally think it helps to know what you want to do - helps you to prepare in advance... although I've not firmly decided yet!

I have a pal who went onto Ophthalmology and then spent years travelling round the world on that aeroplane that fixes people's eyes. ... You know, the Orbis project.

Anyhow he once spent time on a Scottish mountain side on his hands and knees looking for my displaced lens, but then I realized that it hadn't come out but had only slid round to the top of my eye. May be that is why he headed for the skies.
