As many of you know, my daughter is a professional musician. For many years part of her performing life has been with the Glasgow based Gamelan Naga Mas. They perform Indonesian traditional music, along with modern compositions in the Gamelan style.

I thought I'd post this photo of my daughter, taken during a performance at the Hexam Festival.

If you are interested, you can learn more about Gamelan at

I read as much as i can (still without lenses) as I am squinting like mad and it is giving me a headache!

Do you know how the group came into existence; is there a sizeable Indonesian community in Glasgow? Indeed, is there any Indonesian involvement?

I would be interested to hear some of Jane's music. Is there anywhere such as myspace where it can be heard?

so far as I know there is no indonesian involvement in Gamelan Naga Mas, just a group of misucians who were interested in exploring a different tonal structure and discovered the 5-tone scale of Indonesian music that is set aside the 8- tone structure of the western tradition. They do sometimes accompany traditional Indonesian storytelling, and when puppet masters come from Indonesia GNM often accompanies these performances.

Jane is currently in the process of setting up her own website. This will invlude her wide musical interests: classical flute; jazz, GNM, etc. She and her business partner are in the process of setting up a new community music company "RinkyTink Community Music". (the name may change).

I'll let you know whenever there is some music on the interweb.
