Massachusetts...

Though there is actually a New England flag too (there are a few variations depending on time period, but this is the most common since the Revolutionary War).

Revolutionary War ... Was that the Colonial Rebellion? :D

Does "New England" have a political as well as a geographic identity. I just thought it was a general name for states on the NE Seaboard.

I love Mass. Was in Cambridge a couple of years ago visiting friends. magnificent city, and the seafood restaurants in Boston are, well, every bit as good as the seafood we enjoy in Scotland

Kind of like how the American Civil War is the "War of Northern Aggression" to some Southerners. :)

No real distinct political entity... New England is made up of of Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island and Connecticut. So yeah, basically the North Eastern grouping of states.

I think it must be the southern cross influencing you! Also you hve plenty of opportunity to say Ausie Ausie Ausie Oi Oi Oi. There's the cricket, the rugby ... ... ...

I hear on the wireless that England is getting a hammering in India.

We have friends in Rhode Island. It is a tiny state with a huge name!

By the way Chrism, your State motto is a bold statement:
Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem
By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty

I take it to mean that without liberty there can be no peace, and that the free will fight to bring liberty and peace to others.

Andrew, sorry not to have found the original post... I've now added some "ALT" text for the flags, which means (at least in Internet Explorer) the flag name will appear when it is hovered over.

I know Mozilla-based browsers need something different, and I'll include that when I remember what it is!

I don't know if I have a mozilla based browser. I use Safari, it came embedded with my Mac OSX, although I seem also to have both Netscape and Explorer but I don't use them.

Anyway when I look at the flags in the gallery a little label appears and tells me either the full name of the country, or its two letter suffix tag.

I get a slightly longer tag when I hover over the avatars in the side column. Here I am told where I can find the picture ... common flags, EU avatars etc.

Thanks John
