John

Well I took the exam after I did the Domestic Installation Course. But to be NICEIC qualified I needed on the job exp. WHich I wasnt going to get as I did this for myself and adding a skill to be honest....i would have also needed to be PAT certified which would allow me to certify as well....but seeing as though I didnt need that...I just got someone in

So I got in a NICEIC electrician.....charged me £90 for a test and inspection on the ciruits and sockets I put in...

I did this more for my own sanity to be honest and also with the new regs coming out for Home Information Packs (although not compulsory yet) its good to have a ten year cert...

Well done Jayuk.

Know what you mean if you require competent tradespeople who take pride in their work and you expect quality they are hard to find......like rocking horse manure.

Thats why I did DIY at home. Plumbings straightfoward although you should not do gas pipes unless your Corgi/ACOPS qualified.

Wet trades, especially plastering now thats a challenge! especially two coat plastering to masonry walls. Skimming to plasterboard is not too bad to master though!

You can cheat with the walls by dot and dabbing the plasterboards to the wall with an adhesive plaster then skimming the board.
Alot quicker and not as messy. Most spec house builders use this method now.

Better insulation to the external walls as well only drawback is fitting fixtures to walls!

Steven

Spot on, I didnt touch Gas as Im not Corgi. I got it serviced by BG for a nominal fee.

Plastering was kool and fun, but requries patients! I had about 8 walls that I PVA's, bonded (as they were masonary), then scratch coat, then applied a finish coat.....however downstairs I got thermal plaster board. Its just a fancy name for a heat insulation coating on the boards lol. Then just applied a finish coat on top....came out flat and well....just had to make sure it wasnt polished finished! other wise the paint would have rolled off!!

Andrew : We are thinking about it....had estate agents round last week, and had a viewing yesterday......we decided to give it 4 weeks on the market; if it sells then good..if not we'll move in!....although wife this morning said shed rather just move in!....as we cant cope with another move, new baby, my DALK, etc all within a window of 3 months.

I call her light weight! lol..Women! :-P
