Got an iPhone

Postby Andrew MacLean » Tue 18 Dec 2007 10:54 am

I got an iPhone yesterday. Takes photos, plays music, makes calls, sends eMail, surfs the www and most of all has large clear letters that are easy to read. So, I am now a customer of O2

Wow, Andrew! First a pedometer, then a digital camera, now an i-phone. You're charging ahead in the technology race from relatively modest beginnings! :D
I think this makes you an 'early adopter' as they say in marketing circles. I too am an O2 customer of some years, I got an XDA Smart Phone back in 2002 which has been recently replaced with the current version. Its a great bit of kit, similar in many ways. I've even got a full version of the Bible on it! :D

I really do enjoy my iPhone. I have downloaded loads of photographs from iPhoto (on my 'puter) to my phone, so that I can show them to the family tomorrow.

I also have loads of music from iTunes on my phone, which seems to double as an iPod.

It will take until next month for my own phone number to make the transition from T-Mobile to O2, so in the meantime I am carrying two phones; one to make calls, send SMS messages and eMails, etc and the other to receive calls. Where was all this technology when I was growing up?

:D

If anyone out there is wondering whether the iPhone is all it is cracked up to be, my own answer would be "Yes it is."

Congratulations on your new iPhone, Andrew.

I'd get one were it not for two and a half factors:

1. The lack of 3G support. When I'm in a non-3G area, internet pages are so S-L-O-W compared to nice HSDPA (high speed) 3G!
2. The horrific contract with O2.
2.5. The lack (maybe) of a proper qwerty keyboard. If there's an on-screen qwerty then I'll happily remove this objection. I just can't text using the number pad to save my life!

It certainly is a nice beast though... I'm looking forward to iPhone 2!

In answer to your objection 2.5: the iPhone does have an onscreen qerty keeboard.

I understand your objection to the O2 contract, but the one I have ought to save me up to £15 per month when compared to my old T-Mobile account.

I am afraid I don't know what 3G is  , but I can latch onto WiFi networks and get pretty fast download speeds for things like maps. I do have a little problem that has nothing to do with my iPhone. When the phone recovers eMails telling me about new posts to the KC site, I would have to enter my forum password to enter or, at least, to respond. The problem is that I do not have the first idea what my password is! My computer remembers these things for me, so that I don't have to.

I have found that I have access to several translations of the Bible, several folios of the works of Shakespeare, an almost complete anthology of poetry in the English language, as well as original texts and translations of the works of Omar Khayam, the Q'oran, the Vedic Sutras etc.

One question for some clever people. Why is it that I can get and send eMails when I am out and about? Is this only possible because some people do not 'password protect' their wireless routers?

Anyway, I was in the Apple store today looking to buy headphones for my iPhone. (I dislike 'earphones', if you understand the distinction that I am making). They had so many toys that I had to leave, but not until I had bought my wife a nice little iPod.

Does anybody know if it will ever be possible to use the iPhone on different networks?

You poor thing

A lot of people have been returning the iphone lately as there seem to be a few "issues" with it, mailny concerning software and camera.

Sorry to tell you this Andrew, there are better phones out there...LG Viewty or the Samsung F700 (the closest to an iphone yet and better)

:D

Well, my camera works, the iPhone has an iPod that is large enough for me to carry around three or four days of uninterrupted listening, it uses Safari, interfaces with the diaries I keep in my Apple suite in my study, buzzes when I need to stop doing what I am doing and get ready to do the next thing, and it saves me £15 per month!

There will always be better phones; or rather phones that are tailored more exactly to different people's demands. At the moment the iPhone suits me. In 18 months or so I may decide to go to another manufacturer, but in the meantime I am happy using the phone that Apple built. It is nice to have an homage to Alan Turing in my pocket.
