Troublesome eye

Postby Sophie Bull » Sat 10 Dec 2005 7:53 pm

Hi all, it seems i only ever come on when Im looking for advice..but I hope you dont feel like this, just been rather busy starting a new job and stuff.

Had my intacts operation about 6 weeks ago. The last few days have been rather uncomfortable, it is not painful so much, but its not right either! I went to bath hopstial on Friday, but the consultant although very helpful, was not (surpirsie surpirise!) very familiar with intacts, infact it was the first he had seen in real life I htink. He was not sure why it is hurting. I thought it was to do with the stich as the irritation is the same side as the stitch, but he said it is not lose and he didnt really want to take it out. I am going back to see someone a little more expereicned on Monday, but I dont think he has ever done an intact either. I have some drops to tide me over untill then.

At the moment I very tempted to beg them to take the intact out again..its driving me mad! my eyesights is no better and due to extra large pupils I have an almost continous circle of light in my vision due to reflection. I think it is possible for them to take it out, but I dont really know for sure.

Any advice? or questions I should direct at the next not so familiar doc!?

Hhmmm am not so sure here either, not having any experience with intacs. Just wanted to say that i'm sorry that you are having trouble, and that it is ok to come here and post when you are in a bad place. That's what this forum is for!

My understanding is that intacs don't improve your vision, but make it easier for you to get a lens to sit on your cornea properly, although i could be wrong here. Am hoping that you will get to see someone soon who knows what they are talking about and can help you.

Please keep us updated, and hoping that things get better soon.

Sophie

Some words of advice I guess..if they havent got experience and havent inserted / touched one before PLEASE dont let them take it out!....the potential downside of meddling with Intacs if you arent experienced can cause YOU the patient severe problems!

If you can, go back to the ppl that did it, OR go to an Intacs specialist...and get a proper opinion......(although I am sure you would do that anyway :-) )

hope that helps

Hummm, Intacts and KC...sometimes works, sometimes doesnt. Im my experience its a bit "experimental" at present. However it all depends on the surgeon and his her experience with the technique. My suggestion is to get back asap to the prescriber/surgeon with your probelms. The intacts can be removed (easily) with the correct kit and expertise.
best, and good luck!

Sophie..

Irritation with intacs post op is often due to drying around the incision and/or stitch. If they have given you lubricating drops then you need to use these quite liberally.... (though check first exactly what they gave you before you go using them too much - if its something like a steroid drop then you can't go using this more than you have been told!)

I would suggest you try hanging on until its all settled as if the irritation is due to drying around the incision area, simply removuing them is not really going to help. Vision is something that will come with time.

The intacs themselves are not irritating you, as they are positioned below the nerve layer so you can't feel them. Its incredible how sore an eye can be due to simple drying etc - I know it can feel like you have half a brick in your eye when its only a slight problem!
