Bad Eye Day!!

I am fed up of being asked if I'm alright because my eyes are red and sore looking. I look like I've got a bloody hangover

I didn't sleep very well last night, and all today I have had sore, stinging, crispy, hurting eyes,

Think I need a career change as well, staring at screens all day is killing my eyes.

I've been applying celluvisc regularly throughout the day,

Started getting light sensitivity aswell which I never used to have

The annoying thing is I don't know what's caused it!!

Today shouldn't be any different to any

I feel like such an idiot sometimes crying and wincing cas of RGPs making my eyes hurt! And having to rely on them for vision.

I hate this Condition sometimes. Think I may go to bed :-(

Lots of sleep, lots of hydration (drink water), lots of artificial tears (I use Clinitas Soothe), all go to help make eyes less dry, red and sore.

Every good wish.

Bad eye days can come out of the blue and little things can trigger it such as wearing lenses for an extra hour one day; spending an extra hour at the PC; scratching the cornea when removing lenses; dust/ grit under a lens which you were unaware off because it has gone once you remove the lens.

I used to get these a lot when I was wearing RGP's and eventually my lens wear went to an hours painful lens wear.

That said, once I change to a different lens type (I now use Kerasoft IC), the past five years have been absolute bliss with no eye problems at all. My hospital had their reservations at first becasue they cost more, but now as I see them so infrequently now, they admit the overall costs is much less because Is ee like a normal person.

Resist all temptation to wear lenses until the bed eye day(s) is completly gone as puttting a lens in too soon can set you right back and delay your recovery.

By the way I stare at screens all day and my soft lenses cause no problems at all with this.

Ask you eye care practitioner about ways to keep your eye hydrated, ensure your work place have completed a Display Screen Assessment for you and you bath adhere to the findings which will incklude regular breaks, periodically look over the top of the screen as it helps make your eyes blink so flushing tears more frequently.

Extended computer use and reading books causes you to blink less which results in the eyes drying which leads to increased friction of the RGP lens on the cornea which leads to irritation as shown by red ness, discomfort and light sensitivity.

For many of us, relatively simple changes can make a huge difference.

Thanks for the tips guys!

I will try drinking more water, and will go to bed earlier tonight. I do love sleep anyway so shouldn't be hard.

I hope my RGP lens wear doesn't diminish to 1 painful hour a day!! I have been feeling them in my eyes today and they have still been dry and sore. If this continues i'll book an appointment with the optom and see if they can fit me hybrids/piggbybacks/soft lenses. I don't mind sacrificing a bit of vision to have comfortable eyes.

I might make a cup of tea and steam my eyes too

Glasses do give me pretty good vision actually, but I get self conscious a the lenses are quite thick on one side. Other eye is -3.5 so not bad. I refuse to pay £400 though to get really thinned down lenses

Me and you both mate - seriously annoying!!

Also, this line from your most recent post sums up how I feel exactly:
"I don't mind sacrificing a bit of vision to have comfortable eyes"

I've been trying to convince people at the hospital to let me try Kerasoft/Hybrid lenses, but this idea keeps getting overlooked.
I do feel it would make a difference, but I feel like I just keep getting "fobbed off".
Like it would be a hassle to introduce a whole new type of lens & it would be easier to just string me along with the RGP.

I have listened to all the advice (sleep more, use more drops, drink more water etc) and put this in to action, but the redness still comes back.

Nothing frustrates me more!

Lewis, are you seen at Manchester for your contact lenses?

If so, I know for a fact they fit many people with soft lenses for KC, including the Kerasoft IC.

I'm sure you should be able to get kerasoft lenses on the NHS. I don't really see how they can refuse if RGPs are making your eyes go so bad.

If anyone's interested in getting them privately, you can usually get kerasoft lenses for about £150 each and they last up to a year, which isn't too unreasonable considering it will make your eyes more comfortable.

Jay - if you seem to be getting dry eyes / light sensitivity more often, have you thought of having cross-linking done to stop the keratoconus getting worse?

I get stingy, hurting eyes, if I don't get a good sleep and im tired.

Especially when my g/f stays over, cos im so used to sleeping alone.

I drive for my work, so i need to wear lenses. Glasses just don't give me good acuity, even tho I meet the driving standard for vision.

Yeah I have but can't really afford it. Can you get cxl on the NHS now? I guess I could ask my parents.

I bought a peroxide cleaning system yesterday which seems to have helped. I cant wait til summer when there isnt all this central heating.

Eyes are still sword but not as bad as last few days. I am not able to wear them in in the evenings like usual. Usually wear from 7am-10.30pm so 15.5 hours
