Anna,

How big is your scleral lens? I've been wearing a semi-scleral with three fenestrations for the last year with great success - despite an ulcer for the last week. :(
My lens is about 17 mm in diameter.

In France, where I live, sclerals aren't as popular as they seem to be in Britain, judging from this forum at least. I have just recently found this forum which is a great way to learn.
Congratulations to the administrator!

Bruce

fenestrations

Postby Rob Armstrong » Mon 22 Mar 2004 11:21 pm

Fenestrations. Definition: The presence of an opening or window.

Knew I'd heard it somewhere before. In this case, I'm guessing its the holes in the lens.

Fourth result down on Google. Google is the daddy.

Anyway, hope that helps.

Rob.

That's right. The three fenestrations are there to increase tear flow (like many kc-ers, my tears are lacking both in quantity and quality) which brings more oxygen to the cornea which avoids neovascularisation which ...

'Nuff said.

Hi Andrew,

It's not I can't use Ami-dose, I just feel it will get way too expensive with everything else. I already have to buy large amounts of solutions, Hypromellose, Anti-Allergy drops, Viscotears etc.. Often I find the price of these products tends to increase much faster than inflation.. I remember when Hypromellose was about £0.80-£0.90 per bottle not £1.50!!

I too received my Scleral lens (Only One) last Wed, I've been too scared to put it in so far, but might try today.. My Fiancee doesn't like the look of it when it's in, but if Its comfortable and I can see, I don't really care..

Funny thing I came back from the hospital and then took it out the first night with the sucker, I swear my fiancee nearly passed out as she walked in whilst I was doing it.. :)

Philip.

Bruce,

If you have the fenestrations, does that mean that your lens is not made out of RGP material?

John,

My lens is an RGP, made of Boston XO with a DK of 140, which means it's highly permeable. Depitte that, my optician, who is also a manufacturer, drilled three holes in the lens to increase the tear flow.

How big is my scleral?

Postby Anna Mason » Tue 23 Mar 2004 7:01 pm

I did a quick measure with a plastic ruler and I would say about 21 or 22 mill. I could be more accurate but I havent got a micrometer and my pet engineer has gone to Tesco's to get the groceries. I havent got any fenestrations but then I have got a cat, a horse, 5 goldfish and a very warped sense of humour.
