intacs

Postby helen_freud » Tue 15 Jan 2013 4:26 pm

hi, i have had karatoconus for 12 years i found out i had it at the age of 14 and didnt really understand it. but since finding out all about it i have been deversated ever since. my brother had to have an emergancy gaft and is still in recovery nearly 18 months later (was a really bad case and he had it done in spain). i am considering intacs (which i have only just found out about after 12 years of suffering) i have an appointment to go see my specialest as my current contacts are causing my pain but i have to wait over 2 weeks for an appointment and no one else at the hospital will touch me with a referral from my GP. has anyone had intacs and could anyone advice on if they are worth it and also are they available on the NHS or am i best to go privart?
thanx in advance

Hi Helen and welcome to the forum,
It's hard to answer your question as Intacs seem to work well for some people and not at all for others! And they are available on the NHS at some hospitals and not others so you'd have to check the situation at your particular hospital. A specialist who talked at one of our conferences said that Intacs were unpredictable so the only way of finding out whether they will work for the individual is to try them (though there are also factors like how thin the cornea is and how much scarring there is which might mean it wouldn't be possible or worth fitting them). And most people still need correction after Intacs, though contact lenses might be easier to fit.
And there are a lot of different contact lenses for KC these days, so another option would be to see if a different type of lens would work better for you.
Good luck
Anne
