UK Keratoconus Self-Help and Support Association

Hi All,

I'm looking for a consultant at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital who can continue my care for my Keratoconus condition. I have been seeing an excellent consultant at Harley St, London who performed collagen cross-linking on me in 2008. My vision since has become stable and I now wear RGP lenses with soft dailies underneath in both eyes. Would love to stay with consultant in Harley St but as there has never been an insurance policy I can't afford to see him privately anymore and as I live in Manchester, seeing someone locally would be much easier.

Can anyone recommend a consultant with a special interest in Keratoconus who's at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital that I can see under the NHS?

Hi Christoph and welcome to the forum!
The KC consultant at MREH is Mr Brahma who has many years of experience of the condition. If you ask your GP for a referral to MREH, you'll also be able to get your lenses from the contact lens department there at NHS prices (currently around £54 per lens - if you're piggybacking that normally includes the soft dailies).

Sadly there is very little information here about MREH - not even information about their impressive new home after moving from their previous oppressive not fit for purpose Victorian premises which should have been demolished/replaced decades ago.

Good question - best of luck in getting the information you are seeking here. I hope that you have more success than I have had here when seeking top quality KC eye care and treatment.

Perhaps you should ask Anne,who lives in London if she has ever had a consultation with Mr Brahma and is thus in a position to give a recommendation about KC specialists at Manchester.

As for having a self help KC support group at Manchester that's another story.

Mr Brahma took charge at MREH following the retirement of Mr Rosen.

When you move into the NHS system you accept whoever the specialist is in your local hospital.People base their recommendations on their experiences of particular specialists-experiences differ. I'm fortunate that I go to a hospital in the north and we have very good opthalmologists. However on a public website I would not name them for professional reasons.
If you PM somebody on the KC committee/moderators they may suggest names of specialists who have good reputations. Please do not expect people to post this info in a public place.

I dont see any problem in making recommendations in a public place especially if the intent is to help and support and be friendly to others who are in in the unfortunate position of having KC.

IMO your comment really highlights the limitations of this website forum which sadly imo has not fulfilled its potential to put the best interests of KCers, first.
