Corneal graft, cornea too thin?

Postby o0omaco0o » Wed 07 Nov 2012 11:53 am

Hey,

Not sure where to post this. Basically I overheard one consultant suggest a graft for one of my eyes and the other consultant disagreed as 'the cornea was too thin'. I have not had a chance to bring this up with the consultant but can this be true or have I just jumped to conclusions? I tried reading up about grafts but i did not come across thin corneas being a reason not to do it.

I think you've probably jumped to conclusions. The cornea being too thin is a reason for not doing crosslinking. As far as a graft is concerned, as I understand it, a thin cornea might affect the type of graft that is carried out. So a DALK (a partial graft) might not be possible but a full thickness graft would be. But I'm not a medic, so do talk to your consultant who will hopefully be able to reassure you.

Oh i know about it being too thin for crosslinking, it was during getting that done that i overheard them talking! Thats okay, i thought that i had jumped to conclusions, just wanted to double check. I probably wont be speaking to those consultants for a while so ill just have to see what happens :)

Hi,

I was just about to repear all of what Anne has said.
I couldnt have cxl on my right eye as the cornea was too thin. I had a graft last week. Went into surgery planning and hoping on a DALK but was aware if my cornea was to tare where it was very very thin then plan b would have to be a full thickness graft. Thankfully that didnt happen and surgery was completed with a DALK.
