Hi Everyone,

I was just wondering what the average time was between having one corneal transplant in one eye, and then the other in the other eye? Hope someone can help, as I am looking to have mine done next spring!

Best wishes

When I needed transplant surgery in 2003, the surgeon asked me to get out my diary and we agreed on a date. I think it was seven or eight weeks from the consultation; this allowed the timing to fit my diary and for other things like pre-theatre visits to be carried out.

Yes, I was seen on the NHS,

Andrew

Hi Jennie,
It's actually only a minority of us who ever get to the stage of needing transplants in both eyes. Can't remember the exact figure, but I think it's only something like 10% of those who have one transplant find the other eye also needs a transplant. And for those that do, it can be many years before the other eye becomes severe enough to need a graft.
I was one of the 10% and in my case, the other eye was almost as bad as the one that first had a transplant. So in my case, the second eye was done once the first graft had been given the all clear and I could wear a lens in it again. So it was 2 years between the two eyes. But I'm sure there will be people here whose experience will have been different.
