Athens Procedure

Postby Hayley » Thu 23 Aug 2012 8:39 pm

After seeing a specialist I am booked in for guided PRK & CXL (apparently called Athens Procedure?) in October.
I am very nervous and hope that I'm making the right decision?? Has anyone else had this done?
Thanks Hayley

Hayley

All any of us can do is listen to the advice, research the benefits and drawbacks of potential treatment and then make our decision.

All the best with the decision you have made.

The "inventor" of the procedure provides an overview of how the arrived at it and their results (from 3:10ish is a bit less technical).

Hi all,

I had a topoPRK+CXL experience, performed by dR K., 7 months ago and everything was and still is OK. The eyesight from 4/10 is now 9/10 without glasses, there is a significant improvement of ghosting, I put off my glasses and I am very optimist and confident.

As a KC patient and not as a specialist, I recommend the Athens Protocol. For those interested I insist on the following factors to be taken in consideration, before deciding:

1. The KC parameters (minimum corneal thickness, position relative to the corneal center, other topographic factors). The A.P. requires a removal of precious corneal tissue of 50 microns (max).

2. The experience of the surgey (research and applications) in this combined treatment.

3. The use of the "state of the art" equipment (pentacam, wavelight fs200 and ex500, avedro kxl) for maximum accuracy.

By the way, the CXL performed by dr K. on my right eye was the "rapid" one (10mw/cm2 for 10 min).

regards

epik

The athens protocol is the best treatment for KC out there. Despite being able to obtain 20/20 with scleral RGPs I chose to have it done for preserving my quality of life. Being able to obtain 20/20 with glasses or soft lenses is just priceless.

I had it done 4 weeks ago now, it is available in the UK, but unfairly (in my opinion!) only through private treatment.

How much was the procedure if I may ask.

My eye consultant has referred me to a higher up consultant at Liverpool St Pauls Eye hospital.

This is due to progression during the 6 months between my last scans.
