Well my new lens have arrived and boy are they hard to put in. I have a small bubble in there but I have tried several times and this small bubbly will just not go! Will a small bubble cause any problems?
I had large scleral lens about 3 months ago and they gave me a corneal abrasion. It was just so painful and I was adviced by the emergency orthoptist to not wear them again as my cornea is pretty bad. I asked my consultant to put me on the waiting list for a transplant but he said I have to exhaust more types of lenses before I would be considered for surgery.
I have had them for three days and I am seeing two different visions from both eyes and it's causing me distress. I have a little one to look after so I am finding it a challenge as I can't clearly see.
I am worried the small air bubble may give me a corneal abrasion?
Thanks for advice in advance.

Re: RGP Scleral lens
Hi Monira,
I've never worn scleral lenses, but I don't think a bubble can cause an abrasion. In fact, it's pretty unusual to get a corneal abrasion with sclerals because they don't normally touch the cornea. But there have been quite a few posts from people here about getting bubbles under scleral lenses and I'm sure there have been replies suggesting ways of avoiding them - because what they do is make the vision fuzzy. Hopefully someone who wears sclerals will be along soon to give some advice. Or if you do a search on scleral lenses, you should find earlier posts with some suggestions.
All the best

Hi Monira,
I have had mylarge sclerals for 10 years now and I remember being so frustrated as no matter what I did I couldnt get the bubbles out! Little bubbles will cause no harm its just that you can see them and they may annoy you a little as they tend to shoot around the eye! As you get used to putting them in you will notice them less and less. Try tucking your head right in (when your doing your scleral headlock!) and as you go to put the lens in look right towards your collar bones and then put the lens in - It works for me after many technique changes!
If you ever need any help just ask, I started wearing mine at 15 and have have had my ups and downs!

Re: RGP Scleral lens
Hello Monica
My all time favourite lens was my scleral. I didn't really have any trouble with bubbles, and thought you might be interested to know how I avoided them:
1 I'd hold the lens so that I could fill it to the brim with wetting fluid (sterile saline).
2 Stillholding the lens carefully so that none of the fluid spilled from it, I'd lower my head (and eye) into the lens, holding my upper eyelid away from my eye.
3 When my eye was in touch with the surface of the fluid and the upper edge of the rim was under my upper eyelid, I'd release my upper lid and draw down my lower lid.
4 I'd slip the lower edge of the rim of the lens under my lower lid: that would complete the insertion and while I had always spilled some fluid onto the tissues I'd placed on the table, my lens was in and had no air bubbles.
All the best
Andrew

Re: RGP Scleral lens
Thank you all for the reply. I managed to put them in today without bubbles although I am still strugfling with two types of vision in each eye. Also for some reason the rgp lens are a little blurry after putting in today. Any suggestions?
Another thing I have noticed is my eye with the lens looks bigger than the one without. It looks odd.

Re: RGP Scleral lens
Also another question, I have tried to take it off without using the plunger thing? I feel when I use the plunger my eye hurts. I have tried the technique of pulling the middle part of upper eye lid but I dont get it right.
Thank you.
Thank you.
