Hi All

Have been looking for a Sat Nav system for pedestrians. I want to make myself a bit more indepedant. I am using my guide dog in places where I know but not in places where I find it difficult to get my bearings I thought a SatNav would help. Have been looking at the Garmin and Tom Tom website but am not confident that these products will help me out.

Has anybody got any experience in this area?

Hello Drew,

Yes, I have such a device, and rather handy it is too. It's a "Mio 168" (search on Google will surely find it) and it's basically a Pocket Windows PDA with a built-in GPS antenna. I then loaded a copy of TomTom's software onto it, and away I go.

The only real gripe I have with it is that it can take a little while to lock on to the satellites to know exactly where you are, and that the TomTom software is a little odd for pedestrian use (although it will direct a pedestrian to walk the wrong way up a one-way street, it won't navigate a pedestrian into a "no drive" zone - though it copes well navigating out of one!)

I gave up on Sat Nav as all the people who use it when they come visit me get directed to cross a ford that is only passable by large farm vehicles when the river is extremely low!

Giode dog might like, but would not be much fun for Drew
