Depressed

Postby swanny » Sun 22 Jan 2012 8:56 pm

Hi all,

I am a bit of a lurker here but find the forum very helpful. However for the first time in 20+ years of being a KC sufferer I am depressed about my condition so thought I would post.

I have KC in both eyes since 16 and am now 43. I was given RGP lenses from the start and have worn them ever since. In 91 I needed a graft on the left eye which was done at my local hospital. After a year the hospital said that I needed another graft as they still couldn't fit a lens on the eye and my sight was non existent.

Luckily my Boots optometrist suggested I get a second opinion so I was referred by my GP to Moorfields. Moorfields were able to fit a RGP lens and I have had excellent sight with the lens in that eye to date. Around 5 years ago my right eye deteriorated and I could no longer wear RGP lens. Moorfields tried me with a scelrel lens but it didn't work for me - poor sight which just made the good left eye sight worse as I got loads of ghosting etc. Around this time I also started to suffer poor vision in the dark, I mean I can't see in the dark at all, its like looking at a black wall.

In March 2011 I underwent a graft on the right eye at Moorfields. It was a partial graft and the stitches were removed last September. I then went back in December and they tried a RGP lens on the eye. They had trouble even fitting a lens as the astigmatism was still very high. In the end they got one to fit but the vision is poor, not even half way down the chart.

Last night I had to drive 40 miles in the dark along A and B roads and it was just scary at times, with dimmed headlights I find it hard to see the road ahead and so get very nervy breaking all the time :(

I think the journey last night has not helped my mood today, together with the poor results of my right eye graft. Sorry if this post has gone on but I just need to say (type) it.

Regards,

Nigel

Hi Nigel,
I'm sorry you're going through a bad patch at the moment, but I'm sure lots of us here have had low times and understand how you feel. It's also true that lots of us have problems with night driving.
As for the vision in your recently grafted eye, now that the clinic has found a lens that is a good fit, I wonder if they can do any further tweaks to improve the vision? Alternatively, sometimes it's possible to improve post graft astigmatism by doing some 'nicks' or 'relaxing incisions'. Worth asking about both contact lenses and possibilities of refractive surgery at your next appointment.
All the best
Anne

Hi Anne,

Thank you for the reply. I am due back at Moorfields in March so will inquire then.

Regards,

Nige
