When did your Keratoconous stop progressing?

Hi

Quite by chance I found out that I had KC when I was about 26 (or thereabouts). It was mild and didn't seem to progress very much until I hit 36, then it progressed very rapidly over a 2 year period. It wasn't until I visited my opticians who tried to sell me a pair of £350 pair of glasses that made absolutely no difference that I knew I wasn't being given proper advice/care and so sought advice privately from a London/East Grinstead specialist. It was then I found out that I didn't actually have KC, but something similar, Pellucid Marginal Degeneration. Since June 2011, I've had crosslinking in both eyes and in had a Wedge Resection with Auto Lamellar Keratoplasty (basically a section of tissue was removed and my cornea was reshaped). So far, my surgeon says everything is healing/progressing and generally heading in the right direction. It really is so important to get proper expertise as early as possible. I found it incredible how rapidly (I know 2 years sounds a long time) my vision deteriorated. I think one gets used to poor vision and often you don't actually realise how bad it is until you can no longer read a book, newspaper, see tv, etc - it kind of creeps up on you!

I am 43, I was diagnosed in my early 30's and had a graft in 2007 on left eye. How long I had had KC before the diagnosis is unknown. I now can wear a hybrid lens in greafted eye and still wear rgp in ungrafted eye. Vision and comfort is great with both
Surgeon may not bother with CXL for ungrafted eye as it has not progressed in 4 years (good)
He is reluctant to correct huge astigmatism in grafted eye with further surgery/laser- so I will have to develop cataracts there, and have them removed to fianlly get rid of the astigmatism- so I am told!

dweezil1968 : sclerals are pretty good how r u doing with them?

@caroline: was ur K stable for 10 years? was your power constant during then too? mine is a very similar case, I was diagnosed at 25 and I'm 27 now and its stable
Reading from the posts, I feel like keratoconous and the 30 age is not the case for a lot of people

As somebody in their 5th decade (45) it is still progressing in both eyes. Several times i have got to the styage where we rhought it had stabalised and my prescription did not change for several months only to suddenly change again. I have had Intacs fitted and removed in my right right and have not been successfully ftted with a lens in my right eye since early 2011. Now waiting for a graft at the nd of March. Nobody i have spoken to seems to know if or when it will stop all though tend to agree that it becomes less normal to progress in your fourties - could be one benefit of getting older.
