Laptop or desktop when wearing specs?

Postby eyepod » Mon 02 Jan 2012 3:08 pm

Hi,

I currently use a laptop at home and have no problems when my contacts are in. When I'm wearing my specs however, (obviously with reduced vision) I find that I have to get pretty close to the screen. I am conscious that my posture isn't great in this position and it causes a little back strain (and I suspect also some indigestion).

Making the font size larger does help but I'm curious to know if anyone has any thoughts about whether a large monitor would make reading the screen easier? Is a particular type of screen better (e.g. does a higher resolution help? Is a glossy screen better or worse than a matt one? Do Apple Macs offer any advantages in this regard over Windows PCs?)

I'd be grateful for any thoughts?

Thanks,

EyePod

Hi Eyepod

Rather than buying a computer there is cheaper method you could go for. You could buy a large monitor, USB keyboard and mouse. These should all connect easily to your laptop effectively turning it into a desktop. And if you get yourself a decent computer desk and chair these would definitely aid your posture although I don't know about the indigestion  .

This would also help with the strain on the wallet.

I use a company called Ebuyer.com to buy parts from. I am just a regular customer so have no other reason for recommending them other than their great service.

They are selling the following although better and more expensive options are available.
Wired keyboard and mouse - £6 - (wireless models available for £10)
22" monitor with VGA connection - £95 (this depends on your laptop having a VGA output).
Then the cost of a desk and chair on top.

Hope this helps and let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
