Had Graft today

Postby ruralrob » Thu 15 Dec 2011 8:42 pm

Hi everyone ,for thise who asked me to let hem know how I got on ,as far as I know everyhing has gone ok today .I have to say we are so lucky in this country for the NHS and evryone was fantastic at the hospital ,making sure I was comftable .I had to check in at 7.45 am and was second on the list ,I had all the usual questions and a consent form to sign ,the surgeon explained all what could go wrong and I must admit after he had reeled it all off I wondered if I was doing the right thing ,but I know I have made the right decision for me, and the risks of things going wrong are small but understand he had to point them out .I went down the theater at 10.15 and remeber being awake aboput 13.15 .I was given some pain relief as the eye was huting a little bit (not much though )I have been told to keep the bandage on all night and go back to the hospital at 8.30 in the morning then I will start the drops .I think I am only going to be on one kind of drops - 1 drop 4 x day as she said they are combined ( I might be wrong there ) I have only been given 2 x bottles of Maxitrol .One thing I did find starnge was I asked the surgeon about having the stitches out and he said sometimes he takes some out ,and sometimes if everthing is ok he leaves some in indefinately .Looking forward to having the bandage off in the morning and seeing my eye with no scar for the first time in years .Im not expecting any great wonders in vision as through reading on here I understand that is going to take quite a while .

Right off for a quick cuppa and an early night .Thanks to everyone for there support and answering my many questions I have posted over the last few months it really has been a big help .

Bye for now Rob

Well I am so pleased I had my bandage taken off this morning and its fantastic ,no scar !! I have even got a little vision in the eye (not great ,but hey its something ) my wife was with me and when I said I could now see her face with my bad eye she had a few tears . The eye is very very sensitive to light so am wearing sunglasses some of the time .Does the sensitivity wear off after a few days ?

That's brilliant, Rob!
As far as I remember, for me the light sensitivity lasted a few weeks, rather than days. Back then, Moorfields issued post-op patients with a pair of VERY dark glasses which I was very grateful for. I also remember keeping the curtains drawn when I first got up so that my eyes got used to the light gradually. But these are minor inconveniences in the graft journey, and well worth it in the end.
All the best
Anne

Ruralrob

every good wish with your recovery. Isn't it strange how your perspective on surgery changes when you look back on it rather than forward?

Hi Rob

That's fantastic news.

I'm still feeling a bit nervous about tomorrow (do we have a special handshake for this club? ) but have just found out a friend is having a triple bypass on Thursday!! Puts my op into perspective (although not enough at the moment).

I'll post when I have mine done and can get to the computer (I'm a PC addict so hopefully won't be too long!!)

Take care.

All the best for tomorrow, Jaimz.
I like the idea of a special handshake!
