Hi there Rob

There are specialist insurers who will provide just this sort of cover -- I used to know the names from memory but... Old age obviously taking it's toll ! Have got to get myself ready to go to an opticians appointment so have to dash off now but will post again later today with the names of the providers who operate in this market.

Cheers

Chris

Right, the first step I'd take would be to use a price comparison website which allows those needing non-standard polices such as for pre-existing conditions to get cover. The comparison site is called AllClear Travel Insurance. Here's the link http://www.allcleartravel.co.uk You can specify Keratoconus as a pre-existing condition including if you've had a graft (see the screenshot in the file attachment).

The subject in general was covered quite well a little while back (including this comparison website) on BBC 4's "You and Yours". Here's the relevant part of the programme:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00xb0s5#p00d8ztx

They did make the point that there's not much competition in this segment so choice is very limited. This does impact costs compared to the mass market rate for cover which equivalent in all respects apart from the pre-existing condition. Just something we have to put up with alas -- we do in fairness to the industry present an extra risk. The real costs come from doing the risk assessments and subsequent more tricky underwriting rather than because we're all constantly generating especially big claims. Oh, that and the higher margins on the product of course..!

Kind regards

Chris

many thans Chris for the information ,I went on moneysupermaret.com they have a section for existing conditions and found a company ,it has cost $40 for the week as apposed to about £10 for normal cover .Worth it for peace of mind i guess ,just had to state i was having cornea transplant ,they asked weather it was less than 6 weeks or more than six weeks and that was all they wanted to know .Hopfully it should be ok and I wont need to use it .It is 5 and a bit weeks after the opp when we travel ,just have to remeber to take all my drops etc .thanks again Rob

Hi Rob -- glad you got it sorted. Definitely worth paying the higher premium inherent in declaring your condition. Better than having to face a horrendous bill should the worst happen. But you'll be fine. Enjoy your break.

Cheers

Chris

Thanks for that Tristan

We are off to Majorca for a week in October, Cost £1.08 addition premium for declaring a Cornea graft so a no brainer really.

Thanks again

Ian
