Hi guys ,
It's two years since I had a full corneal graft on my RE. I have had little or no complications to date , but my vision is pants. Having an AK on Tuesday just wondering has any else had post graft refractive surgery? How successful was it etc??

Not had this, but I do look forward to reading your impression of the procedure and its effectiveness.

Hi
Speaking as an optom myself, a few of my patients have had this procedure very successfully. One had originally been left with such a tilted graft surface that no contact lens fit was possible, so basically did not have vision in this eye for 7 years. After the AK, a contact lens fit was possible and also vision in spectacles, so its definitely worth it I would say !

In case anyone is wondering, AK stands for Astigmatic Keratectomy which basically means partial thickness incisions are made along the steepest meridian of the cornea which results in flattening of corneal curvature in that meridian, and hence reduction in astigmatism. In my experience success rate varies, sometimes you end up with almost as much astigmatism in the opposite direction ie the cornea flattens too much where incisions are made. However its worth a try if there's a large amount of astigmatism and contact lens fitting isnt feasible or desirable. Good luck.
