Hi!

How bad is it if it is not possible to get a topography anymore because of the irregularity of the cornea? Or is that common with patients that has KC?

My KC was diagnosed about 6 years ago and now i wear piggybacks. I wear them up to 17 hours a day depending on whats going on in my life that day. At the moment though I'm getting really tired of all this I just wanna be able to see properly... I'm getting along alright though.

Just found this forum, the best I've found so far. Here in Sweden it is not easy to get information on KC. And all the english sites are not always easy to understand.

Cecilia

Welcome to the forum!

In fact getting a Corneal Topography is ideal for KC patients as it allows us to see how much the condition has progressed. I generally get one once every 12 months; or every 6 months in my case over the past year due to it increasing substantially in one of my eyes.

Can I ask what vision you get with PiggyBack method?

Cecilia...

If they can't get a topograph then yes, your cornea is quite distorted - but to be honest this sometimes depends on the software used. The distortion may be more to do with your contact lenses distorting your conrea.. what lenses do you wear?

Jayuk,
Thank you,
My vision with piggybacks has been great until now so i guess i have to make a new appointment with my optican to fit new ones.

Lynn,
I wear RGP (i guess,i'm not too sure. i have to check it out) with Focus Dailies under.

Hi Cecilia
There are various corneal topographers on the market and some are easier to use than others. In my experience I find Orbscan giving more failures than most other instruments even when the cornea isnt particularly distorted. Hence, I wouldn't read too much into the fact that they couldnt do topography. As you are getting good vision with lenses it would suggest that perhaps lens fit isn't ideal and causing excessive corneal distortion rather than the cone being very advanced.

Hi,

The clinic i go to here in Stockholm is the best renowned eyeclinic in Sweden and many of the KC-specialists work here, as far as i know. But still i have problem getting information. Maybe it is because i haven't been able to ask the right questions. I'm gonna look around and read alot here, write down all questions i have and bring them to my next appointment.

A topography is (as the name suggests) a 2d representation of a 3d surface - in this case, your eye.

Basically, you look at a (briefly) illuminated cone of alternating black and white stripes. These stripes are reflected in your cornea, and a detailed photo is taken of the cornea with the reflections showing.

Complex computer software then analyses the reflections, and by doing that works out the shape of your eye, producing a coloured image which shows the optometrist the steepness of your cornea.
