I have been trying to find all the eye hospitals in the UK and find out which of them have an A&E Unit.
I know there are a lot of hospitals (especially in ENGLAND) that have an eye clinic but not an eye A&U but I haven't attempted to list them yet.
All the following are NHS Units so you should be able to find emergency treatment or advice at any of them.

I am researching the Northern Ireland eye clinics/hospitals at the moment but information on the web is sparse to say the least so if any of you out there know of an eye clinic or eye hospital in Northern Ireland please send me the information. All I need is the hospital name, its full postal address including post code so folks with sat navs can find it and most of all the hospital phone number.

This already looks like a very impressive bit of work. I wonder whether you would consider making a distinction between hospitals that have eye clinics and those that have full ophthalmology departments? The distinction may be between hospitals that offer a full service, clinics, wards, surgery as well as optometry and contact lens clinics, and those that have visiting ophthalmologists on a sessional basis, who would take patients to another hospital for treatment.

It is maybe a bit misleading to say that Gartnavel has an eye clinic when it is the home to the Tenant Institute of Ophthalmology; the gold standard ophthalmology department in Scotland.

This is the very early stages of what is looking like being a fairly massive project. I decided to post the initial results to get precisely the sort of comment/information that you give in your post. The information I need is out there but is buried in the convoluted tangle so beloved by civil servants i.e. to get the postal address of one of the west of England eye clinics I had to visit 14 pages of their site to find it. You would think that something as important as that would be one the home page or at worst one click away.

What I am hoping will happen is that members will look for their own clinic and then tell me I haven’t got all the information and in that way the database will grow to the point where it can be published for everyone to read.

There isa eye casualty at St James Hospital Leeds within the eye departmetn int eh Chancellors Wing Mon - Fri 9am - 5pm and Saturday's 8.30am - 12noon. Outside these times go to regular A/E and ask them to bleep the duty optom

The Royal free hospital in hampstead has a clinic , so does St Thomas , both in london Bob .

Thank you all for your information, it will be added to the site in the appropriate place.

Andrew - the present project is solely for emergency eye treatment. Judging by the levels of information I have gathered about the Scottish Boards, to list all the hospitals having eye clinics and wards for eye surgery would triple the size of the project and I feel that at this stage it is big enough as it is. However it is a thought for future projects if this one is well received.

To help develop this project and to make it easy to link to the KC site if the trustees approve, I have bought the domain emergencyeyetreatment.org.uk. I have moved all the files to the new site and you can watch the project grow at http://www.emergencyeyetreatment.org.uk. As always your input is very welcome indeed as you will have information that isn't available on the web. However the place for critical comments about individual eye clinics is in the appropriate post on the forum, this post isn't about the quality of treatment offered by individual units just about their existence and how to get to them.

This weekend I have concentrated on Scotland and I have finished about half of the pages. I hope to complete the rest of Scotland before my wife has her replacement corneal graft on the 28th April.

Whipps Cross hosital now has its own eye department (in a special uilding) with consultnat(s) on the staff, and also a specialist eye A&E (at other end of the eye building).
Eye A&E is open longer hours than the main clinics; in the early hours of the morning (!) you go to main A&E and they will call the eye speialist on call.
WX is north east London, E11 (Leytonstone) and I think postal address is Whipps Cross Road, Leytonstone.
