UK Keratoconus Self-Help and Support Association

Hi

I have had KC for some time. I have tried contact lenses without success. I would now like to visit a consultant privately to see what other options are available to me. Can anyone recommend or know of a consultant who specialises in KC who is based either in central London or Sussex. I am struggling to determine who of all the opthamologists i see listed, would be the most appropriate person to visit. Any comments or ideas appreciated! Nigel

I am afraid that I am not from your part of the world, but wonder why you are so keen on a private consultation? Have you exhausted the NHS route?

Indeed I feel as though I have exhausted the NHS route. I would like to get another opinion and am prepared to go private. But if I do so I want to make sure I see the right person

Understood, but don't forget you have a perfect right to be referred from your current NHS clinic to another if you are not satisfied with the way things are where you are right now.

Crikey, and I get wary giving recommendations as to which is better out of Waitrose, Sainsbury's and M&S for cheese. But I know what it's like to be sat there thinking "where do I turn, who can I have a sensible consultation with about my Keratoconus who'll give me all the options and won't pressure me into this- or that- treatment ?".

A private consultation (c. 45 mins or so) will set you back about £150. Contact his secratary on the number / email address on the website. His office is in Harley Street for private practice. He does also see NHS patients. As Andrew said, might be worth another go via the NHS route (but it's pot luck who you get).

Definitely worth as you're doing getting all the facts and taking the initiative when it comes to managing your condition in my humble opinion. One only has to take a look at Lea and Rosemary's tales of woe in Let Off Steam at the moment to see how you can feel like you got railroaded into somthing that didn't end happily ever after... I think your approach is highly commendable.

I'm hoping that some of the optometrists and other professionals will contribute here to give you an outline of options other than RGPs.

i am in Sussex- you have a lot of choice
Centre for Sight in East Grinstead, and Mr Daya, nhs and private
Mr teimory at Worthing Hospital (KC specialist, surgeon) nhs and private- he did my corneal graft
sussex eye hospital in brighton- nhs

I saw simon Levy in London to get a letter for my GP £150) so that a graft was speeded up on NHS, and was then sent to Mr teimory- who is excellent
