Hospital appt

Postby pam39 » Tue 21 Sep 2010 10:21 am

Hello, in my last post I was concerned about my eyesight getting worse. I was diagnosed with keratoglobus at 16 years old (42 now). Recieved loads of good info and advice from this forum. My GP referred me back to the hospital to speak with my consultant regarding what options are available for me. I have no useful vission in my right eye and my left is about 6/18. Got new glasses but they made no real improvement. The appt with the consultant is tomorrow (weds 22nd). I am going to ask if contacts may be an option for me. I am also going to ask if there is anything that they can do for my right eye such as a cornea graft. Can anyone advise what else i can ask as I want as much info as possible in this appointment regarding what my options are. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank-you.

Pam

Sorry Pam - you probably won't see this before your appt now. But do ask about the full range of contact lenses - scleral, semi scleral, hybrid lenses, specialist soft lenses and piggy backing as well as the standard corneal rgp lenses. I do hope there'll be something that can help.

Hi. I asked about contacts including scleral lenses and brcause of the shape and advanced stage of KG contacts are not an option for me. Consultant said they would definately not help my vision. He is very doubtful that a cornea transplant would work as my corneas are very thin and weak all over so they wouls have nothing to connect a new cornea to. However he wants a second opinion as he feels hr does not have the expertise to do anything more for me (appreciated the honesty) so he is referring me to Gartnaval Hospital in Glasgow. He has advised me not to hope for anything as he doesn't want me to be disapointed, fair point. So I am thinking that maybe there is nothing that can be done now and anything else is a bonus. Still trying to take the info in as I was hoping maybe there was something they could do. I have lots of positive things though, a good job and a supportive friends/family. This forum as well as I know that people have been through much worse and understand.

Hi Pam,
Well, it's positive that you're being referred to Gartnavel - I think some of us were suggesting that you try to get referred there in response to your earlier posts. They really are experts there, so perhaps they will be able to come up with something for you. I understand you don't want to get your hopes up, but we'll all be wishing you well.
